These were all on my server, and represent about 90 hours of processing, since they all stopped at 100%. If you try to stop and restart the client, it gives you the message "work unit on disk is invalid".

Which core version were you running? (that's not shown in the log snippets)
We recently updated the A2 release cores to 2.02 and for a brief time had the server requesting that clients update to 2.02. The auto-update process appears not to be working properly, and some WU's downloaded during that period aren't uploading properly. I believe using qfix may allow the WU's to upload.

And qfix did save the day, and they were all sent in. Since this is a "headless" and non-networked server, the folding it does is largely unmonitored. Just got very lucky, this time. :)

Yes, I'll be updating to the latest Linux version.

I also had two WU's go the same way:

P2671 R47 C1 G75
P2671 R35 C13 G75

I tried qd and qfix with no positive result, FAH just wanted to start the WU's over from the beginning. So I turfed my work folders and started fresh.

I don't have the patience for cryptic tools . . . if the scientists want more from me in this kind of situation, build better client software.

After the client has been restarted a few times, it can thrash the queue, and cause a loss of the work.

It's noted elsewhere, but here's my take on using qfix, and it worked very nicely and easily, saving all 3 2671 WU's for me.

1) Get the latest qfix - be sure it's the one closest to your linux or bsd distribution. If you use ubuntu, the Debian based qfix is the one you want, from:

2) Stop the FAH client (ctrl + c), of course

3) Put qfix in the same directory as your FAH client

4) Make it an allowed executable file: either select it with your mouse and right click on "properties", and then check the "Allow this program to executie" checkbox, or in a terminal window, enter chmod +x qfix.

5) Run qfix - it will tell you all is well with the FAH queue, if the queue hasn't been trashed, already.

6) Run the FAH client with the added "-delete N" flag, where N is the number that qfix shows as having the bad WU in it.
A command line might look like: ./fah6 -smp -verbosity 9 -delete 3
where the FAH client has been renamed "fah6".

7) It will come back in a minute or two with the message "unable to delete this work unit". Stop the client if it doesn't stop itself.

8) Now run qfix again, and this time qfix will show it has repaired one slot in the queue.

9) Now start the FAH client again. It will immediately send it in to Stanford if it's done, or start folding on it, if it's actually OK. It doesn't need a -send all flag, anymore.

It takes longer to read this, than to do it. If you have not done it already, delete the A2 core when the FAH client is not folding with it, so the FAH client will automatically update you to the 2.02 version of the A2 core - it will hang a WU less often, I'm assured.

This works so well, I wouldn't use Qd or other utilities.

Klasseng, I quite agree with your opinion on the lack of stability of the client, hurting FAH. You only have to search the forum for my posts, to find some real "rippers" on just that topic. I fold for Overclockers.com (team 32), and we have lost 1/6th of our entire team of folders, since these unstable clients have been released. Many of those who have stayed on folding, now do so with far fewer boxes.

Obviously Vijay knows the stats on number of boxes, and number of folders, but like you, I don't believe they really have 100% realization of just how much this has hurt the growth of FAH. They're closer to all the details than you or I, and need to do what they know is best, surely. We now have two jobs, if you can accept it 1) to keep on folding and 2) keep the faith that the instability problems will be diminished to mere "background noise" levels, soon.

So . . . imagine the increase in FAH work done if:
- the client had some robust error detection and correction
- the client would detect a problem WU/Server/Client install, and handle it gracefully
- the client would inform the administrators of a problem WU/Server on it's own
- the client had the same user friendliness of good consumer software
- wouldn't have to post questions to a forum, search for repair utilities, search (in other places) for instructions in the use of those utilities
- the client would install with a simple "drag application package" to the Applications folder
- the user would double click on the client application and it would just run, asking for additional information on initial run
- the client would quit gracefully (instead of the user having to make sure that it isn't in the middle of writing data when quiting)

Perhaps, just perhaps, the figures in:
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/mai ... pe=osstats
would show that many more than the current ~ 10% of total CPU's are active CPU's.

Perhaps many more people would run the client and run it more efficiently.
