Brings me back to a question I asked about 4 months ago, and didn't receive a suitable answer.... where exactly is the WU information hiding these days when it comes to an SMP client????? Deleting Queue.dat, unitinfo, core, and work folder used to force a new WU.... that doesn't appear to work any more unless a full PC reset/OS reload is carried out..... is there something I'm missing, or is it time to just start deleting everything but the config file and re-installing the client? (This is getting frustrating when it happens).

The Server keeps a record of the CPUID and machine number. Hence you are reassigned the same WU. The number of times it is reassigned varies but a sure method to not get the WU is to do this:

Step 1: Stop the F@h Client
Step 2: Delete the Work folder
Step 3: Delete the queue.dat file
Step 4: Change the Machine ID to another unique value
Step 5: Start the F@h Client

For more information, please read this -> viewtopic.php?f=19&t=16526

I have marked it for a follow-up.

Changing the machine ID does seem a bit drastic, but I'll keep it in mind, thanks for the link. Maybe they should switch to a time limit rather than hammering the same machine with the same crap WU? On a machine that's been 24/7 folding stable for over a year, I'm more inclined to blame the WU, but if I got two different ones in a row that crapped out I'd be looking at the machine instead.

Expedient is a better description than drastic. You could continue to delete the WU a few more times, and come to the same result. Or simply reconfigure. Besides, most bad WUs will fail with an error, so this step isn't necessary.

P.S. The explanation from toTOW 4 months ago seems accurate... http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?p=167601#p167601 He describes how the server keeps track, similar to what PantherX said. But he did not include the expedient step.

Heh... well in this case, I counted 5 times it "cleaned up" the work unit folder (in the log), and I know I deleted it manually at least a couple of times.... IMO, there should be a hard limit of max 5 attempts by the server to reassign the same WU. (Of course, now I'm curious to see if anybody else manages to get it returned.... ;) ).

Looking forward, not backward, the key question is not how to fix V6 but whether the same problem exists in V7 or not. I'd be interested in a similar scenario when running V7. If it does fail, there's a lot better chance of getting it fixed than if does not.

I pulled the exact same WU again!!! Currently letting it run it's (apparently never ending) 5 - 10X attempts at getting the same WU in order to see if it ever actually stops trying to give it to me..... looks like it's a -advmethods so maybe it's time to turn that off for a while......

Going to turn off -advmethods in the hopes that it stops trying to give me the same WU again.... can anybody verify if it's been sent to any PC other than mine (folding username is same as username here).

edit: Looks like dropping the -advmethods did the trick, but we'll see once the next WU is pulled by that machine. The PITA about this WU is that crashing the core removes any chance of auto recovery as the client waits until you acknowledge the windows "fahcore_a3.exe has stopped responding....." message. I've got 2 other folders running smp 24/7, and all three (two still on -advmethods) are coming due in slightly over 5 hours.... how much do we want to bet that one of the other two tries to pick up this WU as well????

There were failures in the WU Database so I have marked it as a bad one:
The WU (P6958,R0,C92,G6) has been reported as a bad WU.

Thanks. Is there any way to tell if the failures came from different sources? I'd hate to think that my machine was at fault (it's still chugging away fine on all other WUs so I doubt it), but if it just happened to keep getting to my machine (3 separate times, not counting the multiple failures from each of the times I was given the WU) there is always a slight chance the issue was on my end.

Yes there is, the Donor name, Team number and (partial) CPUID is different for each entry. In this case, 4 different Donors failed to process the WU so it has been reported as a bad one.
