AM, why are you wanting to switch clients? If you just want it to start/stop when you start/stop your computer, you can reconfigure it to run as a service.

Is that what you want?

Three posts back - cannot run it as a service under Windows 7. I know how to close it properly but it will cause issues with other family members who cause issues to begin with. ;-)

EDIT: I closed down properly as you can see in the log and added a case fan which brought the temps down nicely.

Either way I have run into a glitch already. I have not changed anything since posted last time but here is the rest of that log UNSTABLE MACHINE

The one that that you processed Project: 10117 (Run 679, Clone 0, Gen 35):
Hi Annmarie (team 4),

Did you open any other application when you encountered the first UNSTABLE_MACHINE? Or did a program automatically launch?

Have you considered downclocking your GPU? It will reduce the PPD but what I am intrested in is, if that will solve the UNSTABLE_MACHINE issue or not? If you're intrested in testing it, please tell.

BTW, I did close the CLI window from Ctrl+C and the X Button and it never gave me an issue at all (in both, GPU2 and GPU3). Furthermore, the systray version and the console version should perform identically since they both use the same FahCore_11 to process the WU.

Re: Having issues with GPU client

Post by AnnmarieD »

I very well may have opened another app - maybe my e mail or a word processor. Also I have a program called Window Washer that runs automatically every hour tidying up bits and pieces.
The only way I can be sure that nothing else is going on during a run is to close down Window Washer and not use any applications on this computer whatsoever. Then check the log file.

I can do that after this post actually.

I would consider under clocking - sure. I have no idea how but I don't know a lot of things. If you think it might help this UNSTABLE MACHINE I am willing to give it a go.

I really do want to change back to the systray client though if that makes a difference.
I do not want other users of this computer closing the console client and forgetting to restart it hours at a time.
With the systray it can easily be paused and restarted. They have already been trained to do that. :)

I am going to restart the client right now - after checking my mail and closing Window Washer. I have a laptop I will use to check back into this thread.

sortofageek wrote:AM, why are you wanting to switch clients? If you just want it to start/stop when you start/stop your computer, you can reconfigure it to run as a service.

Is that what you want?
AnnmarieD wrote:Three posts back - cannot run it as a service under Windows 7. I know how to close it properly but it will cause issues with other family members who cause issues to begin with. ;-)
Somebody must have figured out how to hack their way past Microsoft's security by running a GPU as a service. Microsoft has released security patches which prevent the GPU from being used by anyone other than the task that is currently logged on. :( This certainly makes a GPU less useful to FAH in cases like AnnMarie's.

Well, I did say I've never seen a GPU. Although I have Windows 7, I haven't yet installed it, waiting for something newer for that. Thanks to AM, I'm at least learning a little about GPU clients, especially with Windows 7. :)

AM, I'm not familiar with Window Washer, either but, if you think that may be messing with FAH, is there a way to configure WW to leave the FAH folder, subfolders and files alone?

I think so but for right now I am going to let the client run totally undisturbed and see what we will see. In the mean time I will use my laptop.
And I can live without Window Washer. It is a nice little auto app but manually running CCleaner would be fine with me.

AFAIK, there isn't any hack or anything to make the GPU Client to run as a service under Vista/7.

The GPU Client was able to fold without any issues from [05:41:07] to [15:08:35] so can you remember the PC state during that time and try to recreate it? How about temperatures? Were they too high or not? Any slight detail will help.

If you really want, you can start with my previous post (with all instructions) but this time, install the Systray GPU2 or GPU3 (depends on your choice) then proceed from there.

For Downclocking, you can use Afterburner (http://downloads.guru3d.com/Afterburner ... -2562.html). It has a simple GUI and works on a variety of GPUs. All you have to do is to lower the frequencies by 20 MHz and hit apply. The changes will take place real-time and you will notice it in the graph.

BTW, can you please run a chkdisk (http://www.w7forums.com/use-chkdsk-check-disk-t448.html) just as a formality. Just to conform, you are using the HDD with SATA2 Connection, right? (It doesn't matter in majority of cases but I just wanted to get to know your system in more detail).

Since I cannot say with certanty if any programs were running or heat was an issue with the last log I am posting this log - the very latest.

Nothing else ran on the comp during this attempt.
Temps of CPU and GPU were fine.
chekdsk just finished with no errors.
Yes on SATA cables.

Re: Having issues with GPU client

I'm folding this project ok with a GT240 [running Ver r2 -latest as above noted]. It's been churning p1174s out for weeks and clocked just back from max.
It's doing pretty well. It doesn't get 'good points' on these WUs- about 80% of what is possible and is a bit edgy on EUEs- if pushed with these.
The reason I'm checking out p1174 issues is that I can't run my old [installed alongside]PCI 8400 GS card on p1174 work. [using client r1].
I was wondering how long this work server would hog my cards? It's obviously a large project [on Ubiquitin, which I actually take- on occasions].
The 8400GS logs in for work as a Version 11, which is correct from previous successful work, with me using the g80 flag as usual- and then does non stop EUEs [if I don't stop it, via firewall].
I'm just waiting for some alternative work to appear now. This behaviour occured with 66xx units earler- so not too surprised.
I assume it is also unsuitable for 1174 work, as advised earlier here- but, as I have a GT240 card doing 10X the work OK, not so bothered.
