Having issues with GPU client

Post by AnnmarieD »

Long time member of Team Helix here but a first timer running the GPU client. I have been getting various errors since I installed the client. Not sure if this is an NVIDIA issue but I was advised to post in this forum first just in case.

If you would like to see my original thread I posted at DSLReports in the Computing Club Team Helix Forum - GPUing, lots of WUing but no return.
I post that because I put a lot of the destails there that I may miss here and I cannot post the link being a new member here. :)

Sorry if this is too much info.

I have a tri core AMD Phenom chip that is running two instances of the no nonsense F@H client. No issue there.Graphics card is an NVIDIA 8600GT.
Downloaded and did a clean install of the latest drivers as described at the NVIDIA site specificall for the card and system I have. No overclocking.
Downloaded and install this client: Folding@home-Win32-GPU-systray-641.msi

Things were wuing right along but after a while I noticed my points/production was not increasing. Checked the log files and found several errors - most notably UNSTABLE MACHINE.
Researched here, tried an uninstall of GPU and NVIDIA drivers and reinstall several times with a good cleanup in between. No luck.

Issues on and off for several days and here I am now.

Here is the last part of my log file:

Pausing the client is the right thing to do until we figure this out. You're earning few, if any points, and you're not producing any useful science.

One likely candidate is bad hardware. Have you run MemtestG80 on that GPU? See http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadUtils

One of my favorite Mods hangs out over there and she's probably helped you with a lot of things I might suggest.

Running MemtestG80right now. So far no errors up to iteration 12. Will post back upon completion.

I don't even know what a GPU looks like yet, Bruce. Someday, maybe, but I really can't be much help with this if my economy ever smiles on me again.

I directed her to this section because I thought I saw one she completed and sent home successfully, couldn't see the result in the database. I was rushing through the forum so quickly I missed the part about the server having a problem with the WU.

Sorry, Annmarie, but you're in excellent hands here.

As long as you say it's OK sorto - I don't want to tick you off being a Mod here and all. ;-)

Anyway - the mem test completed and the screen flicked off - no errors found but I have no log of that to post.

Windows 7 64bit
266.58 whql driver for the graphics card from the NVIDIA website after choosing all the specific details for that card.

I am reading through the troubleshooting guide but am running out of time here in NY. I will have to rerun the memory tests again in the morning.

That troubleshooting guide is for the GPU3 Beta. I am running the GPU2 if that makes a difference.

I have read your thread on the other Forum (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r255890 ... -no-return).

The GPU Client that you're using is actually GPU3 v6.41r2 (from the FAHlog that you have posted in this and the other thread) while the GPU2 Client is v6.23 so what is the current Client that you're running (or want to run)? For your GPU, you can use either one.

For the GPU to fold, you only need the Nvidia Driver to be installed. There isn't any need to download the CUDA toolkit or anything. Since you have been experimenting with different drivers, I would suggest that you download and install Driver Sweeper (links and instructions in my Guide) and install the latest Drivers. If you want, you can install the 258.96 WHQL Drivers which is recommended by the developers.

I believe that you're running the Systray version. Since you are already running the Console version, I would suggest that you get the Console version of GPU3 (or GPU2 if you want) and run that. However, I have heard that the latest Console for GPU3 is a drop-in replacement so you can download the older one (link in my GPU Guide) and then replace the .exe file with the latest one.

Also, can you tell us what temperature does your GPU reach while folding? Is the intake vent and fan clean or is it clogged up from dust?

AnnmarieD, welcome to the Fold. I can see one problem that could be stopping you. I don't know nVida architectures, but the 8600 is probably a compute capability 1.0 card. With the 6.41r2 client, you're showing compute capability 1.1 (species 11). There is a new flag to be used with your card and the new version of the client. If you can read through this topic, it should help you out. Check out viewtopic.php?f=50&t=17879

I'm afraid it has bad news if my conclusion is right but the seniors here have the final call. I don't think your card will be able to process the 1011x work units. Again, I'm not an expert on card power vs atoms. Bruce or PantherX is that sort of person!

Actually, the 8600GT is Compute Capability 1.1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA#Supported_GPUs) so in theory it should be able to fold FahCore_15 WUs. However, since the WU is FahCore_11 (according to the FAHlogs) which is giving errors, it is weird. It could be due to leftover driver files or something.

BTW, most troubleshooting steps work regardless of the GPU3 or GPU2 Client. If you have any doubts of a particular step, feel free to ask and we will clarify it for you.

You should give the GPU2 6.23 console client a try. For my 8800GTS 512 (G92) it's the the only client which runs stable.

Or your 8600 GT (G84) is defective (see http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia ... ,6121.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_8_Series).

Fahrenheit451, are you able to process 1011x work units? If so, do you have any idea about the shader count on your card vs. AnnmarieD's? I usually just assume the 8xxx series cards are older cards and therefore compute 1.0 devices. However, I've got PantherX to keep me honest and I will have to do my homework in the future. I'm wondering if the 8xxx series cards are having problems with the bigger work units?

OK here is my real reply. Let me see if it will post

I am going to attempt to reconstruct what I did AFTER I noticed things were going wrong:

In the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs I uninstalled the CUDA Toolkit and Folding@Home Win32 gpu.
I rebooted.
I ran CCLeaner several times in there to pick up any bits and pieces and I did run the DriveSweeper_210 after I uninstalled the toolkit.
I downloaded and installed 266.58 whql driver for the graphics card from the NVIDIA website using there "how to find what driver is right for my card page".
I rebooted.
I downloaded, installed and configured Folding@Home -Win32 GPU systray 641 simply adding my name and team number - no flags - just plain vanilla.

My fans and intake are quite clean but I cannot tell you the temp of my CPU when folding since I quit. I will restart folding and post back.

In the mean time - is there a step by step that I can follow? I am getting a bit confused as to what to uninstall, install, try and not.
I confuse easily. :)

I would like to clean out everything and start from scratch.
Also, when I uninstall a driver how the heck to I stop Windows from installing a new driver upon boot up?
