Project: 2685 (Run 3, Clone 22, Gen 46)

Post by texinga »

Had a really strange thing happen today on a 2685 WU on my main Bigadv rig. This rig has processed countless Bigadvs of all types for the last 3 months. It is a standard Workstation rig with a single 5650 Xeon, no overclocking or other performance tweaks and dedicated to Folding when I Fold. I run no other programs on it while Folding and don't even browse the internet. The memory is 6GB and after the WU problem today I ran 2 complete passes without error of Memtest86. I was actually watching the WU finish in the Console Client (FAH630) when it happened. It got through stating 100% complete, but rather than sending the information as it normally would, I got the error info included in the Log file below.

I'm very perplexed about what this would all of sudden happen and see no indications of having a problem with my PC. I have plenty of disk space (~311GB free) and just the one drive C where everything is installed. I don't know for sure that this 2685 WU is at fault, but wanted to report it here in case someone could help me figure out what to do about this problem. In the Log, you will also see that the FAH Client, rather than obeying the -oneunit argument I had set for this Bigadv job, went ahead and began loading the very same WU to me again. I had to cancel that because I need to see if I can figure out what happened. I think the FAH client should not restart itself under these conditions or at least it would be helpful if it didn't automatically grab another Bigadv IMO.

The -oneunit flag is ignored after an error. It only considers completed WUs.

Are the files from that WU still in the \work folder? We may be able to learn something from them. They would contain a 07 somewhere in the name. (The next WU would have files containing 08.) Sorting the files by time might help determine if they're still there.

Yes, I haven't cleared the FAH "Work" folder yet because I wanted to wait to see what I could learn from this issue.

In that folder, there is a file titled "wudata_07_prev.cpt" and it is the only file with an "07" in the title. It has a last modified timestamp of 6:19 am today which is very near the time that the WU was supposed to finish this morning.

What can I do with that file to find out some useful information...I'm all ears! :e)

Thanks,

Rick

Unfortunately that's not a file that would be useful, at this point.

I just noticed something that may be pertinent to what happened. As I said, I have 6GB of memory installed and all 6GB tested OK with Memtest86 today (which is a boot oriented test outside of the Windows OS). But....I just remembered that this PC has Windows Vista 32bit installed. From what I recall, all 32bit versions of Windows limit the usable memory to 4GB. I confirmed this looking at the Task Manager "Performance" tab because it shows 3566MB (or roughly 3.5GB) of Physical memory, 2058MB Cached and 65MB Free in the Memory info area.

So, the question. Is that too little memory to run Bigadvs or could I possibly be on the cusp of whether it is enough or not? If it is too little, then maybe I've just been lucky all these months with the Bigadvs that have run without problem. I don't know, but thought I'd throw this out there in case it does matter.

There isn't any report in the WU database yet so have marked it for a follow-up.

Regarding your concern about memory, the current Windows FahCore_a3 is 32 bit so that would mean that it can use a maximum of 2 GB (the limit is 2 GB per process).
