I really had enough of this WU. I don't know how many points I have lost over the last weeks. Almost every third WU ends with the same Client-core communications error. Is there anyway to avoid this ?? I'm using the Diskless folder on an usb stick.
I know that SMP has still somehow beta status, but this is getting unacceptable.

Hello Beamwalker and welcome to the forum!
This WU (Project: 2671 (Run 40, Clone 60, Gen 29) ) has not yet appeared in the database, but the previous generation was completed by another donor on 2009-05-13 00:05:00. I don't think you have had this WU over and over again, since it was just issued a day ago. You must be having problems with other work units as well. Is it possible that the thumb drive you're using is beginning to fail?
Can you post your queue here? (If diskless folding doesn't have a queue display function, then use qd from
Bas's site ) Once we see the rest of the queue, we can check whether the other failed WU in your queue have been completed by other donors or are genuinely fouled up. Thanks!

Welcome to the foldingforum, BeamWalker.
Since you're new to the forum, you may not be aware that beta software from FAH is distributed on a as-is basis to people who choose to run it. Those people help the project to to find bugs, and apparently ERROR 0xff is a relatively new problem and very little is known about it. If beta testing is not your "cup of tea" then perhaps you should consider running multiple copies of the released client -- one copy for each CPU-Core in your system. It is extremely stable.

I'm sorry but I just see Project 2671 in my FahMon, I don't remember ever single run, clone and gen. My system is absolutely stable. I was running the windows smp client on this machine for more than 6 months with little problems (besides the low ppd in comparison with the linux one).
I used 3 different usb sticks and 1 cf card -> results was always the same. Approximately every third wu bites the dust, sometimes after 20% sometimes after more than 90% which is kind of annoying.
I extracted the infos in my queue file. maybe you can make anything of these.

How big are the flash cards? Is is possible that they're running out of space?

No, the cf card has 2 GB, the usb Sticks 2x2GB and 1x8GB. The 8GB and one of the 2GB models are brandnew. I tried different ones because I've expected them to be the weak link in the chain either. But how I said, the same thing.
An installation on a harddrive is not an option for me, because my system wouldn't be silent anymore. The other advantage of the usb version is, that I don't have to deal with linux as an operating system.

I've run Notfred's version on usb sticks and also other Linux/FAH installations from usb sticks. I do know that Linux is not happy when a partition gets full which was my earlier guess. That's true of any OS and it's true whether you're using a usb stick or a hard-drive. Is it possible that you ran out of space -- that's reasonably likely on the 2 GB devices, depending on what you're installing. Have you seen this error on the 8GB device? Personally I wouldn't use less that 4GB and I'd be sure to pick high-quality flash drives. YMMV.

There is nothing else installed on the flash drives. Since 512Mb easily should do, I don't think size is an issue here. At the moment only about 200MB are in use. Neither it is the brand of the devices. I use only OCZ, Sandisk and Trancend (CF Card).
The problem with the 8GB model is the same btw.
If notfreds usb version would be this fragile and hardware dependent I think others would have similar problems. Maybe I'll try the CD Version later and check. Still I think that is highly unlikely that 4 flash devices are all somehow faulty.

Hi Beamwalker - Thanks for posting the queue. The other WU in there was
Project 2671, Run 19, Clone 74, Gen 30
and you completed it successfully.
I'm not familiar with the diskless folding and wonder whether the installations are using obsolete versions of the client or cores. Your original post indicates that you're running the latest (2.07) core. What about the client? If you check the FAHlog.txt right after startup, youll find the client version number right at the top of the file in between lines of ###. The most recent version is 6.24.1 or 6.24R1. Older versions have poorer checkpointing capability, meaning that when folding is started and stopped, (or perhaps if the thumb drive is moved among computers) they are more susceptible to error. Please check & let us know. Also, what version of the LInux kernel is being used? The version in Ubuntu 8.10 (ends with a 27) is known to be bad for Folding.

I am not sure which kernel is being used for the notfred diskless folding version. Unfortunately I can't check because this folding rig does not have a monitor installed and I am not sure whether I can get this information via network or not. I am pretty sure though that it is not the newest kernel. The client is version 6.02 so not the newest one either.
If my problem is linked to the method of folding (which is at least a possibility) I am wondering why not more people experiencing any problems. After alI it is the same client communications error over and over again -> and a very mean one, since all work done up to then is being deleted.

If the client is 6.02 I expect that the kernel is contemporaneous with it, which would place it several generations back.
Would you like guidance on replacing the 6.02 client with the most recent version?

One of the first things that the notfred distro does when it starts up is download the client program. Unfortunately, the link for this is hard-coded and it is not always the latest.
What I do on both my CD and USB versions is download the latest client from Stanford on another computer and copy the fah6 file to the backup USB flash drive in the appropriate folder .... I think it's 1 (one), but it's wherever the queue.dat file is located. When notfred's distro starts it sees that the program is already there and can't create the link to the older version of the program.
I used this method for 6.24 when I noticed that it was still using 6.02. It does work fine and my logs verify that the latest client is being used.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply. I changed the client as you said and so far it is working. The Fahlog indicates that client 6.24b is used. I'm anxious to see if anything changes. I will keep you posted.

Hi,
That seemed to do the trick. I was folding the last 4 WU's (also Project 2671) without any problems. Thank you all for your time and effort, I appreciate it.
