AMD Pheonix iGPU not working

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

AMD Pheonix iGPU not working

Post by Bowie Wu »

I have a laptop with AMD R9 7840HS and radeon 780m iGPU, which is included in GPUs.txt. However after I tried to add a GPU slot, it showed that the GPU was disabled. The log reads

Code: Select all

15:20:22:WARNING:FS01:No CUDA or OpenCL 1.2+ support detected for GPU slot 01: gpu:-1:-1. Disabling.
15:21:26:WARNING:FS02:No CUDA or OpenCL 1.2+ support detected for GPU slot 02: gpu:-1:-1. Disabling.
(I also have no idea why there are 2 GPU slots.) But I checked AMD software that Open CL 2.0 is actually supported.

Do you mean that you have a Ryzen 7 7840HS processor with a Radeon 780m iGPU?

You didn't show enough of the beginning section of the log to be able to tell why the client detected two GPUs. As for OpenCL support, which drivers do you have installed? Are they downloads from the laptop maker or Microsoft Windows Update, or direct from AMD?

Sorry for my typo, actually it is 7940HS but I think it doesn't matter.

I tried to replicate the problem but this time it didn't happen. What I see is that in 'Configure', the GPU slot ID would be -1 by default. After I clicked save, the ID in Folding Slots section would become 02 or 03, (still) with Status "Disabled" and Description "gpu: -1 -1".

I installed AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. I just downloaded it from AMD official website and update to newest version 23.9.1. And in this AMD software, it shows that Open CL API version is 2.0, and Open CL driver version is 31.0.21031.1005.

The previous version is installed by laptop manufacturer. And updating didn't solve the problem.

Honest, this is going to be much faster if you post the first 200 lines of the log so we can read your configuration.

Sorry. I think followed could be some useful part for CPU slot.

Re: AMD Pheonix iGPU not working

Have you rebooted your PC after driver installation, and are you sure that windows did not hijack that Adrenalin installation and ninja installed their own version of drivers, which never work with anything?
Also, once driver is installed, and you rebooted, and installed FAH, you need to reboot again, for fah to snap out of disable mode. It should pick up your GPU after reboot. However, if you done all this and still see disabled iGPU, then it is possible that latest driver forgot to ship with OCL DLLs.
Can you screenshot FAH Advanced Control System Info tab, the bottom bit is most important.
To make sure that your Adrenalin driver was not overwritten by MS "awesome" windows update, right click on Desktop and see if you can launch Adrenalin Control Panel

I tried to reinstall FAH and reboot. After the reboot the disabled GPU slot disappeared in advanced control (but in web control I can still see a disabled slot...). But anyway the GPU slot is not enabled.

And I 'm quite sure that the AMD software is properly installed, since I can read the current version in the software, which is indeed updated to newest, launched on 24 Aug. And some functions like overlay monitoring works well.

Here's the screenshot of System Info tab

One thing worth noticing is in 'GPUs':

Code: Select all

0
Not detected: Failed to open dynamic library 'nvcuda.dll' : ~
This is an AMD GPU so it should be nothing about CUDA...

What laptop model is this?
I see that opencl device is detected.
Don't worry too much about that Nvidia message.
If you go to GPU slot options inside Configure, and set gpu-index to 0 and opencl-index to 0. Save everything, wait for 30s and then restart your pc, see if the slot enables itself

Also, could you screenshot OpenCL driver string inside of your Adrenalin Control Centre Settings tab. It should show all the hardware and GPU related software installed on the computer
Thanks

It was purchased in China and the corresponding model in Europe is HP Elitebook 845 G10. Actually the OS is Windows 11 single language edition, but it is recognized as Windows 10. I think this is not the problem?

I forgot to mention in the Configure page, gpu-index and opencl-index settings are missing (since I didn't remember how it should look like...)

And here is the Adrenalin Control Centre settings tab.

I added this 2 values in GPU slot, waiting several minutes and restarted my PC. The GPU slot disappeared in advanced control after I open FAH. In web control I can still see a disabled slot.

Here's the log as I open FAH after the restart. Seems the GPU is still not recognized.

Code: Select all

Now I have no idea... GPU-Z says my GPU doesn't support Open Cl.

Image

But it seems that this is not the case in AMD software.

Ok,
FAH is not using Index values anymore. Instead it uses pci-slot and pci-bus.
Your system info is showing pci-bus with value of -61, which I doubt is correct.
Go into BIOS and if possible look for something which allows you to choose primary display adapter. I believe you only have one adapter, which is iGPU, but who knows maybe BIOS coder added the option to select external GPU as primary, and while that GPU does not exist, it might mess things up. Other than that I have no idea what is going on.
So try BIOS, if no success after reboot, go back to Configure, GPU Slot, and in Extra Slot options Add
pci-slot
0
pci-bus
-61
That -61 value is the problem. Not sure why. So anyways, if that does not help. Then take that GPU Z screenshot, launch Adrenalin drivers, top right corner you have this bug looking icon (Bug Report Utility). Click on that and fill in the bug report.
Affected AMD Application: tick AMD Graphics
Product Area (if that is available to you): Driver installation
Affected Game/App: Other
Application Name: GPU Z and Folding@Home
Symptoms: Incorrect Software Functionality
Description: OpenCL is not visible to GPU Z and Folding@Home (Advanced Control)
Steps to repro: Basically say, after 23.9.1 driver installation none of the apps using OpenCL see iGPU as OpenCL device. In particular GPU Z and Folding@home. Adrenalin driver reports OpenCL as installed.
Driver History: leave Current driver
Power Supply: 400W and below
Add attachment: attach that GPU Z screenshot.
Send the report. (If Bug report utility outputs some sort of report number, let me know which one it is. I doubt it will, as I haven't submitted any reports in quite a while) I will then chase AMD to look into that report, to see maybe their recent changes have affected things. I am on relatively similar driver, and mine is showing as everything normal. However my installation goes through a lot of drivers, so OpenCL DLLs are probably cached somewhere.
Other than that, seeing how this is laptop for chinese market, it is entirely possible that OEM simply cut corners.
Oh, by the way, have you installed chipset drivers? Even the ones from laptop manufacturers page are fine. After that don't forget to reinstall GPU drivers :D
