folding@home not starting (windows 10)

Post by Error1234 »

OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home
CPU: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-11300H @ 3.10GHz 3.11 GHz
GPU0: Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics
GPU1: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU
GPU1 Drivers: 31.0.15.3168 (2023-04-13)
Folding@home version: 7.6.21

A few days ago i installed folding@home, for the first few days there were no problems at all.
Today i started folding@home and noticed that gpu1 had no activity in task manager however gpu folding progress still went up, so i attempted to pause folding (with no success, it said it was stopping however the progress did not stop going up).
I attempted to start blender to see if i could get task manager to see gpu activity (i had done this many times in the past with other applications) however blender refused to start with an error saying the opengl version on my computer was too old (my graphics drivers are quite up to date and this has happened before so i believe blender did not find the gpu)
This seemed like a graphics driver issue so i attempted to restart windows.
While the computer was shutting down windows crashed (don't remember the error but it looked something like video_tdm_failure)
When i started the computer folding@home did not start.
i attempted to open the folding@home shortcut several times with no success (all it did was open the web control, which never connected.)
i tried opening C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient in cmd and running FAHClient.exe which worked at first (see log 1) but only worked once. (see log 2)
i have tried restarting, uninstalling and reinstalling, and nothing has worked.

UPDATE: apparently the config.xml file was full of null bytes, fixed it by copying over the sample config, however i lost a halfway done work unit that i spent about 4 hours of gpu time on :(. oh well.

if this happens to you:
make a backup of your work units before starting folding@home (otherwise it could discard work)
after copying config but before starting folding@home make sure to set the option to autoconfigure gpus in the config to true

these steps should help prevent lost work units.

First, don't start the client from command line as show in log 2, always use the shortcut.

Then, check your system for stability, you shouldn't get file corruption or TDR resets. Start with some CPU stresstests, then Memtest86+ for the memory, Furmark or OCCT for the GPU, ... and don't forget to check your HDD/SSD too ...

I'm now pretty sure the crashing is just normal nvidia optimus problems. (happens on my computer all the time)

The log file getting replaced with 0x00 bytes is just what windows does when an application crashes the computer. (would send link to a youtube video showing a shortcut that crashes windows and gets replaced with 0x00 bytes when windows has started, but new members cannot post links)

The lost work unit was because i forgot to enable autoconfiguring gpus in the config file and it threw out the (perfectly fine) work unit for the gpu when starting folding@home because there was no gpu configured, this was solved by backing up the work units (just in case) and making sure to enable autoconfiguring gpus on startup of folding@home. (i did lose the previous work unit due to not doing this)

i'm not sure how i managed to open folding@home with cmd that one time, my current theory is that my brain is not doing brain things correctly and misremembered something. (i'm still not sure how i did it, the log shows "WARNING:Console control signal 1 on PID 5644" and i remember that i did manage to open it with cmd very clearly and that it took a few seconds to exit)

If running on a laptop with Nvidia Optimus, set it to just use the high performance GPU while running folding. This is a known problem, basically the folding process is crashing because to it the hardware has disappeared. There have ben a fair number of posts here about that problem and the only cure.

How do i do that? do i set FAHclient.exe to use high performance gpu in windows gpu settings?
Do i set FahCore_22 to high performance?
What process should i set to high performance or should i use some other setting?
I did some quick searching for optimus on this forum and didn't find anywhere where it said exactly where the setting is (only control panel or bios, which does not narrow it down that much considering settings in control panel are constantly moving to settings and control panel could mean regular control panel or nvidia control panel.)

(Sorry if this post sounds rude, i'm just mad because i lost a work unit at 60% that i was constantly monitoring specifically to prevent something like this.)

Depends on your particular laptop. Some with Optimus you set that in the BIOS, others through a control panel for the video drivers. It is not a setting within the F@h client. It is difficult to provide specific instructions as Nvidia and the laptop manufacturers have implemented Optimus in a number of different ways over the years.

Someone at one point mentioned they found a way to set their laptop to utilize the high performance GPU exclusively for specific applications running. In this case I don't know if it would have to be both FAHClient.exe and FAHCore_22.
