Optimising for folding

Post by TomA »

Hello,
I used to fold a couple of years ago but got out of it for the past couple years. I had to get a slightly better video card after some software that I own did an upgrade and I needed a bit better card. I do know that I got a lower end card since it was all that I needed and I don't really do much that requires a higher end card. My question is...a couple years ago, I seem to recall it being quite a bit faster than it is running now and I'm wondering if it is a setting...or if there is something that I can do to get more production out of FAH. From what it is saying...the GPU WU will take 3.29 DAYS to complete...I seem to recall it being much faster than that before. I have copied my log file below. Thanks in advance!

Code: Select all

Re: Optimising for folding

I doubt there is much you can do to speed up that card. It's an older design, low power, not many shaders, and essentially at the end of it's useful life for anything other than casual desktop use. I'm almost surprised that it's still supported by F@H, as the numbers seem low enough that few if any assignments could complete.

As for the time it takes, it's possible the work units have just grown in size more. I know there were quite a few reasonably short work units assigned to my iGPU during early COVID days... short being a day or less on that integrated GPU.

Most likely you will be limited to CPU folding only unless you want to grab something newer for a GPU.

I appreciate the very honest answer...it's not the answer I was hoping for, but I appreciate it. It's been a couple years since I last ran FAH and I managed to crank out a couple thousand WUs back then on this same system, but it doesn't seem like I'll be able to do that now with the same set up. It makes sense that they have gotten larger with faster tech out there. Thanks again for the answer!

Yeah, the GT 730 is about the minimum that can complete WUs from some of the projects. At least you have one of the 730s based on a Kepler processor, the ones based on Fermi are no longer usable.

One thing puzzling me is that the folding core is attempting to run on CUDA code. The latest info I had was that recent versions of Core_22 would run on OpenCL for Kepler based GPUs. The ending of support by Nvidia for Kepler GPUs and the CUDA support libraries needed to support recent cards resulted in that. Maxwell based and newer GPUs get full support for processing WUs with CUDA instead of OpenCL.

So...if my current card isn't going to perform, what if I exchanged it for this card...would it be much, if any better? I'm not looking for HUGE PPD, but something that could at least complete a WU in a reasonable amount of time.

The Radeon 6500 XT should be a decent folder. And AMD recently released updated drivers for Navi GPUs such as the 6500 XT that brought improved OpenCL processing. One source indicates it would produce about 200,000 PPD.

Thanks once again for the reply. One final question on this:
Do you see any issue with running the Raedon 6500 XT with my computer? Some of what I've read said that having a slightly older CPU, the GPU will bottleneck and not perform to it's potential.

Please trust me when I say that it brings me no joy to have to state that to someone. I just recently caved in and purchased a GPU due to the fact that I couldn't see my integrated graphics lasting much longer for folding. The technology is advancing so quickly that things become obsolete quicker. On the upside the researchers can scale towards the users with newer gear and accomplish more in the same amount of time.

I think Joe was really close on your PPD estimates for the 6500XT GPU, and almost perfectly in line with what LAR systems site reports.... https://folding.lar.systems/gpu_ppd/bra ... 00_6500_xt
You will likely be in the upper end or possibly even be above that average being you have the higher end card.

Is this a GPU you already have available, or can buy for a budget price? If yes, a great choice. If you are buying it new you might be able to get even more "bang for the buck" in terms of folding power and/or efficiency. Like all of us finding that balance between initial cost vs electricity vs what you want to contribute brings in a lot of factors. Also keep in mind that the 6500XT will draw a great deal more power than your current card, and make sure your power supply is up to the task for it.

As for the CPU feeding it, I don't think you will see a bottleneck with a GPU in that performance range. Usually it takes a much more upper tier GPU combined with a fairly slow CPU before users see that issue. Your A10 should be plenty for the task.

For a midrange card like the 6500 XT I don't see the CPU as being a bottleneck. Worst case is you suspend folding on the CPU and just fold on the GPU. The only other issue I can think of is whether the logic board you have will support the new card. That has been reported as a problem with some older boards.
