This has been happening repeatedly this morning for over an hour. Doesn't appear to be a problem on my end.

12:30:11:WU01:FS00:Downloading core from http://cores.foldingathome.org/lin/64bi ... ore_22.fah
12:30:11:WU01:FS00:Connecting to cores.foldingathome.org:80
12:30:11:WU01:FS00:FahCore 22: Downloading 166.22MiB
[snip]
12:48:05:WU01:FS00:FahCore 22: 51.48%
12:48:05:ERROR:WU01:FS00:Exception: Transfer failed

Now it's doing this:

13:45:54:WU01:FS00:Downloading core from http://cores.foldingathome.org/lin/64bi ... ore_22.fah
13:45:54:WU01:FS00:Connecting to cores.foldingathome.org:80
13:45:55:ERROR:WU01:FS00:Exception: Failed to read stream
13:48:32:WU01:FS00:Downloading core from http://cores.foldingathome.org/lin/64bi ... ore_22.fah
13:48:32:WU01:FS00:Connecting to cores.foldingathome.org:80
13:48:32:ERROR:WU01:FS00:Exception: Failed to read stream

Confirmed, happens for me too, except it doesn't find even 1% - it just fails immediately. Is the server overloaded?

Download is now finally starting for me at about 160 KB/s, so it'll be downloaded in about 15 minutes - hopefully.

Normally I would give a laundry list of things to check, except I found one of my machines was also showing the same error.
I have to assume the cores download server is overloaded.

About the only suggestion I can make for now is - if you have multiple folding machines check them for a successful core22 download and copy the files across from that machine.
I'm assuming you're running Windows so the folder you'll want to check is - "C:\ProgramData\FAHClient\cores\cores.foldingathome.org\win\64bit"

Edit: The number of simultaenous connections to the web server has been reduced, to help those who actually do connect complete the download.

Confirming that copying the core directory from a machine that successfully downloaded earlier fixes the failing one. On Fedora Linux, it's everything in the /var/lib/fahclient/cores/cores.foldingathome.org/lin/64bit/22-0.0.20/Core_22.fah/ directory.

what's annoying is that if the download fails, it seems to just hang :(

jcoffland wrote:I implemented a partial fix. I limited the maximum number of simultaneous core downloads to 512. That will cause more clients to fail to download but those that are downloading will get the data a bit faster. More importantly, the API and web apps are able to function correctly while the clients download the new core.
Keep in mind that 30 000 to 50 000 clients trying to update the core at the same time is like a DDoS attack of the server ... please be patient until things chill down ...
