Unsupported_PTX_Version

Post by Gary480six »

I think there is still an issue with the P13456 work units - at least for some of us. With the new 22.0.0.16 core and a P13456 work unit, I'm getting a CUDA_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_PTX_VERSION (222) warning - and the Folding is dropping down to OpenCL.

The system is running Windows 7 Ultimate and the card is a GTX 1660Ti. And Nvidia 456.55 drivers.

I've gotten at least two of these P13456 work units since the new .16 core came out - both with the same CUDA error. But since the system does not crash - others might not notice there is an issue with their Folding. (except the lower PPD)

Suggest you maybe update your geforce drivers? We've been into the 470 series for some time now.

CUDA_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_PTX_VERSION = 222
This indicates that the provided PTX was compiled with an unsupported toolchain.
It seems you have the right drivers for this core (>=456.38) ... unless it's something specific to Windows 7 ?

It might be worth to try newer drivers.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I wanted to wait till that P13456 work unit was finished - before I updated the drivers.

Finished the work unit - update to the Nvidia 471.68 drivers... now I wait.

My first new work unit was a P18201 - so not using the new 22.0.0.16 core.

I'll let you know if I see another P13456 - and what it does.

Look out for 17106 as well, my first 3 work units for 0.0.16 were for 17106.

I just received a P13456, and noticed at approx 3% that it was using OpenCL. Paused it, updated the drivers, then restarted. It restarted from 0% (as expected) with CUDA. I wouldn't have known the drivers needed updating if I hadn't read this thread :)

This is on a GTX 1060

p17106 is a testing/benchmarking project. I assume it was used to validate 0.0.16 as well. See https://stats.foldingathome.org/project/17106

How unobservant am I?
10 minute runs
Weird number of steps
Didn't even look up the project description.

A note for those of you who are using Windows 7, or Windows 8/8.1 in regards to NVidia's plans to support those O/S versions ---> https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers ... J3JTIxJTIx

I'm getting Unsupported_PTX_Version on Windows 10 with version 456.71 of the Nvidia drivers (Studio). Both on a GTX 1050 Ti and a GTX 950.

As it states higher up in this thread, you need to update to the latest NVidia drivers. That fixes that problem.

Thanks for the report ... It helps narrow down the "window" of drivers that this core works with ... The book value indicates >=456.38 ... There are strong suspicions it needs more recent than that and your report helps narrow it down ... So far updating to latest drivers seems to resolve this ... Actually I am not sure if anyone has tested reinstalling drivers (>=456.38) without updating yet.

It is the latest studio driver. FAHClient reports that the OpenCL driver is 456.71, but the NVidia software claims that the driver version is 471.68. I'll try to install the "Game ready" drivers instead.

Did you reboot after installing the new drivers? or have they been installed a while in which case the following may not be relevant ... The FAHClient may not pick up the new drivers until it has been restarted - I use a reboot to make absolutely sure things bed in.

I rebooted several times and even did a clean re-install of FAH.
gunnarre wrote: I'll try to install the "Game ready" drivers instead.
This was the solution. The version 471.68 of the studio drivers seems to actually contain version 456.71 of the compute drivers - at least that's what FAHClient reported. I uninstalled the Studio version 471.68 and installed the Game Ready version 471.68, which gave me version 471.68 of the compute drivers. I'm not sure if this was NVidia's mistake or if it's because Studio drivers are validated stable versions and thus older. Lesson here is to not trust the version numbers on the installation file from NVidia, but look at the OpenCL info in FAHCLient to see the real version of the compute driver.
