This server has been causing grief for the last few days. Can someone check on it?

Hi Scott, Thanks for the report. Last week 128.252.203.11 had very high load over a few days. We then ran into a storage allocation issue causing issues with returning points to folders through the weekend and well into Monday. As of Tuesday ~noon CST we thought we had things ironed out but have recently seen some reports of WUs being dumped. Could you provide a few more details on what you're experiencing so we can get a full sense of the problem? Thanks!

It is telling me it is the work server but never receiving jobs from it.

It's one of only two servers with GPU jobs available at the moment, so bypassing it would not solve the problem.

Yep seeing the same.... it appears overloaded

We all have those "Received short response" warnings in our logs.
I'd seen them many times and rarely read much into them beyond "we're too busy just now".
Sometimes I'll use the lack of assignments as a trigger to do some maintenance on my computer(s). We don't always get to choose those moments.
On a personal level I'd much rather have a server fail to assign me a task than to fail/refuse to accept my completed task.

Hi all,

Thanks for the notes on this. As gunnarre highlights, the bulk of GPU jobs available on FAH are currently housed on this server, meaning that a lot of the FAH GPU folders are currently bearing down on this server. To manage this load, we have set a relatively strict assignment cap on this server to try and prevent it from becoming overloaded. We've also added several collection servers to make sure that WUs make it back to us and aren't denied as was the case ~2 weeks ago.

I'll poke around and see if there's another WS that we can move some of these GPU jobs unto to expedite jobs going out.

UPDATE- it looks like we may actually be limited with our I/O from the university. We have dialed back our assignment rate on our WUSTL servers-hopefully this clears up all of the issues with receiving jobs.

Continuing failure to issue CPU work units; error msg is:
ERROR:WU01:FS00:Exception: Could not get an assignment.

System:
Ryzen 9 3950X running Fedora 32

No WU's for last 24 hours, and very few since July 03.
Is there any resolution pending?

Hi autogrog,

Thank you for posting about this and apologies for the delayed response as I'm current OOO. At the moment as far as we can tell this is an issue with the amount of load going to 128.252.203.11(12) as these two servers currently house the bulk of the available FAH jobs. To prevent server overload, we need to set a pretty heavy assignment cap on these two servers and they're currently being requested for jobs more than they're allowed to give out jobs. We've played around with increasing the assignment cap but that quickly leads to other issues with data transfer between the server and the outside world. We have some folks poking around to see if we can increase our I/O capacity, but this isn't likely to be resolved soon so we're stuck for the moment with our current assignment rate.

At our institution we're currently working on putting together a few new servers to house these jobs. Unfortunately this will be a delayed fix (possible ETA for public jobs ~2-3 weeks) as we want to put them through some internal testing before they get rolled out. In the meantime I see several large CPU projects in beta testing. Beta testing typically lasts ~1 week, though this varies from project to project. As I'm not involved with these projects and don't know when they entered beta testing I can't provide an ETA for when those jobs will become publicly available, but hopefully they will be available for folding soon.

One more problem with 128.252.203.11 like above.

uploading is ok, but the server doesn't accept the WU
My client has just an other WU 16947 but I 'm hopefull, so I don't cancel the WU.
Losing ppd does no matter, but not beeing able to send, does.
