MY compu seems to freeze

FAH provides a V7 client installer for Debian / Mint / Ubuntu / RedHat / CentOS / Fedora. Installation on other distros may or may not be easy but if you can offer help to others, they would appreciate it.

MY compu seems to freeze

Post by frazelle09 »

Am using PCLinuxOS fully updated and a Ryzen 5 and FAH 7.4.4.1 and after a while the compu freezes.
Operating System: PCLinuxOS 2021
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.77.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.9.16-pclos1
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 8 × AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with Radeon Vega Graphics
Memory: 5.8 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon™ Vega 11 Graphics
i don't really know if it's due to our using FAH or something that has to do with the Ryzen. i want to keep folding but some of the guys on the forum seem to think i'm contributing to climate destruction...

i realize these are two topics - the most important one for the time being is to figure out how to continue to use the software.

Have a beautiful evening and please stay safe! :)

That is a really old version of F@H, consider 7.6.21

To give good advice, we need to see the first 200 lines of your log, where it shows your configuration and settings.
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=26036
should explain how.

Dear Jimbo: Thank you very much for replying so quickly!

i d/l, installed and started folding w/ 7.6.21 but after less than a min. the sys. froze and we had to hit the power button to turn off the compu. Rebooted into Safe mode and disinstalled FAH. This morning we went into /var/lib/fahclient and found 3 logs the last of which i am posting in its entirety since i think it didn't reach the 200 line limit...

First guess: Inadequate cooling leading to a CPU shutting down to protect itself.

FAH attempts to use ALL unused resources and if your cooling system is filled with dust or was underdesigned (or if you're overclocking) FAH will prove it's really an unstable system.

If you haven't got something for monitoring temps someone will recommend one (I use win so cant really help) ... Once you have that installed look at your temperatures for both cpu and gpu without FaH running ... it is possible to install FaH and then pause any slots that are created ... If you do that then start the temperatures monitoring get a feel for what is the stable/normal then unpause one of the Fah slots (assuming two have been created (one cpu and one gpu) - I'd try the cpu first tbh.

If bruce is right (and he usually is) the temps of your kit will spike under the load and rapidly increase to levels that the system can't cope with ... pause the slot before it gets too high !! ... if this is the case then we can advise on things you might be able to do to tune your system/setup and/or improve your cooling to see if we can get FaH running stable for you.

Obviously is temps remain ok then we can try looking for something else.

Thanks for replying, bruce!

Well, our system is only a month or so old. It's got the big CPU fan and actually it's sitting on its side with the "top" off at this point - so it's totally open.

It's not overclocked.

Maybe it just can't be used for FAH. Have a radiant morning and as always, please stay safe! :)

Wow, another poster! Thanks for replying Neil-B! Uh, i'm using a small program called gKrellm which gives me the temps. At this point they're at 28 C.

i'll try d/l and running it again but what i saw before the unit froze was up around 58 C. i need to figure out how to use the control panel or whatever it is better in order to pause folding, otherwise the sys. freezes and i have to uninstall, etc., etc.

Thanks for taking your time to help and as always, please stay safe! :)

Still worth checking temps as bad paste between cpu and cooler (however large/good it is) can cause issues ... but if new system then would be surprised to find it can't be used - but a bit of work may be required to find out what is causing the issue .. Let me do some thinking/research (may take a day or so) and I'll try to come up with a list of things to check - there are some checklists for new users on the new user forum - an bruce or others may well have further ideas

linux advanced control can be an arse to get working in linux (tbh) but web control should work - there will be linux gurus here who will be able to walk you through getting it working - but help can be a bit asynchronous so you may need to wait for responses :)

Some percentage of new systems come with poor contact between the CPU and the heatsink. If the final inspection didn't find that problem, it's poor manufacturing QC. (That can be fixed.)

Any system from a reliable manufacturer should be able to run continuously at 100% load without exceeding recommended maximums.

Thanks, guys. Well, at this point i relocated the Web Control and set it at folding while idle which sent the temps from 58 C to 29 C.

Heat sink paste - i'll have to see if my son-in-law or son have some leftover. This thing is sitting all "neked" next to me, so it'll be easy to work on - lol. i have to go look for the new config file because the Web Control came up w/o our user/team info and had to reinsert it - hmmm. It must not be using the same config file. Arg.

Again, thanks for replying and helping and have a great morning - ¿evening? - it looks like one of you might be in England... :)

Is there a setting your motherboards UEFI control panel for CPU Fan Speed??? If so, set it to full speed and save that setting as you exit it to restart your system. See if it makes a difference before trying what I have written below.

Should that not work, I would think that you might want to have the current CPU WU's in progress finish (and then pause CPU folding). Then power down your system, so you can carefully remove the CPU heat sink & fan unit (have a replacement cooling device ready if the one you are removing has those plastic clips that make it a pain to reuse). Then take a Q-tip (cotton swab) with a small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol, and gently clean the top surface of the CPU off. Do the same with the bottom side of the CPU cooling device before adding new thermal paste.

Once the cooling device is back in place, turn the system on and see if the temperature is stable when it is under full load. Observe the cooling fan as well, because if it is making a whining noise, that can be a clue that it is wearing out.

Should you think that replacement is needed, try one of the units from Noctua, as they have a [6]-year warranty. I'm going to suggest looking at NewEgg.com (one of my parts suppliers of choice).

[Adding]: This is the one I am using on my Ryzen 9 16-core system: https://www.newegg.com/noctua-nh-d9l/p/ ... 6835608068

Good luck!

Wow, psaam0001 - thanks for replying! i still need to get some paste but in the meantime, i'll check out the fan speed setting and see what happens when i turn this back on again. i suspect it will eventually freeze and i'll have a chance to shut it off and go into the BIOS.

Please take care and stay safe as well and have beautiful morning! :)

Have you ran any programs to verify system stability under loads that arent FAH?
I'm fond of y-cruncher, simple cli options and can really push the hardware. It also shows the balance of what is being tested between cpu/ram, so if you fail a test, its easier to pinpoint any possible causes.

For monitoring, ryzen_smu gives a lot of detail about whats going on with your processor.

If this is a DIY build, have you set/checked memory speeds and timings?

Thank you for posting, Yeroon.

No, we haven't run any program to verify system stability under loads. i looked up y-cruncher in my Synaptic list, but didn't find it.

As far as ryzen_smu is concerned, i don't know what it is. Is it something in BIOS? or a little program which can be d/l and used?

i'm presently running a smartctl check on /sdb2 which is the OS because when the system finally fails and i hit the restart button, sometimes it comes up with a long list of these>

ext4-fs error (device sdb2): _ext4_find_entry (plus more stuff)

until i hold the reset button and turn off the machine.

Have a great afternoon1, Yeroon, and please stay safe! :)
