Failed reinstall....It will notstart at all

Post by rfharbin »

I stepped up to the lasted 7.6.21 client and it worked good for a couple days then just quit. I tried everything I could think of then went to an old backup and after removing F@H I reinstalled Client 7.5.1. Neither of the two clients are connecting to the net as far as I can tell and I cannot see what on my computer could be causing the problem. I cannot even get to the point where i would enter my name and team number.
Also, I am running Win10 20H2, the latest windows update, but I do not remember exactly when I installed it. Settings says 7/24/20 but that is wrong as I updated a week or two ago. Although this update is supposed to be the fall major update it took only a couple minutes to finish installing it so it must have just been registry changes to open up features already installed last spring. I used an online virus check to be sure the computer was clean, I am using the A/V etc that comes with Win10.

Ideas please.

Gut instinct tells me it isn't the FaHClient version that is the issue ... It was working and has now stopped - that kind of feels like an AV or permissions issue - maybe something has patched on your kit (windows or otherwise) that is causing this ... have you tried disabling the AV just for a bit to see if that allows FaH to run? - or perhaps a safer way would be to check the AV logs and see if it is reporting any blocks?

I have various kit running latest 10 Pro and 10 Ent with 7.6.21 and like you had initially no problems.

I did some looking. FAH is approved through the firewall. It is also in the "Program Files (x86)" folder; but there is no start entry in the "Start, Programs, Startup" Folder. I did the default install, So I am going to have to use the Advanced install it looks like. I do not remember when I last installed FAH but it been a couple years likely and I do not remember whether I used the default or advanced install.

I have been here since about 9am working on this problem and a OneDrive mess

I have got to get some other stuff done outdoors....will start again tomorrow.

Thanks for the input, it was helpful.

I ha some free time before dinner and tried again to delete and reinstall FAH 7.6 this time I used the advanced install. I have the start- Programs-startup entry now and it can go through the firewall but it will not connect, the error code I get is "127.0.0.1 refused to connect.", the network trouble shooter is no help. AND I can surf anywhere???

Tomorrow I will start again, starting by rereading your post; Tomorrow I will limit my time so I get the other stuff I need to do worked on.

One thing to check would be if the update reset status for network connections to Public, they need to be Private the last I checked. I have read of the major Windows Updates doing this in the past.

They are all private, none public. I am 81years old and do not mind getting old; I just don't like being reminded of it! I have got to remember all the stuff I used to do to check and see if some of the computer files are goofed up. DISM I can find OK but there is a command for the Command prompt I can't bring to mind this early in the day.

I run the sfc /scannow then DISM and sfc again in safe mode. I cannot find any problems but it still will not load and run properly. It will not connect, the error code I get is "127.0.0.1 refused to connect.", I will go over this error code again later.

I cannot start FAH to use its shortcut to the log file. Just knowing the name would help as I have gobs of log files. Can you give some help as to where it is on the computer.

Assuming default locations, this is where you will be able to find the log file and logs folder:

V7.6.20 or newer:
C:\ProgramData\FAHClient

V7.6.13 or older:
%AppData%\FAHClient

You can search for FAHClient folder on your system. There should be two of them; one in Program Files which has the installation files, the other is the data folder where all the WU processing happens.

I have far exceeded Einstein's definition of idiocy the last couple days. There are no log files in the Program Files, Program Files (x86) >FAHClient, or the ProgramData>FAHClient folders. I have gone to the page on how to post log files and the info there does not help.

Please understand that I purged anything related to F@H from my computer using Revo Uninstaller Pro because of the frustration I had trying to get Folding again. My computer is just like one that has never run F@H. and after installing the latest Client it will not connect. Look in the Prg Files (x86) folder for the FAHWebClient shortcut to understand what I am saying. I cannot bring up the page to configure the Client. My Firewall is set to let F@H through and I have been surfing around the net daily. I also used the File Explorer to search "*.log" but this does not help as the names of the logs come from a programmers whim and there are gobs of log files.
Needles to say I am a bit Frustrated especially since this is a very busy time of year. I am 81, my wife is 78 and I must do all the driving for the two of us and a handicapped daughter. Our second favorite hobby is visiting doctors offices. ;)

I thank you for continuing to help and I will keep trying. I have been folding since F@H started and did G@H before that.

P.S. I did the SFC /scannow & DISM & SFC scannow again in safe mode a this last weekend also.

Is it possible that the last update included a driver update that messed FAH up?

Yes, that's certainly possible. Microsoft updates the video drivers whenever they decide to and that often breaks FAH's support for nVidia GPUs. You MUST download and install the proprietary drivers from nvidia.com. MS removes the nV version of OpenCL and that's one of the first things that FAHClient looks for.

I do not have a GPU, I had to replace two of them, the last one had a visible burned area and I just have other things to spend money on now. I do have names of family and close friends on some of what we fold for so maybe next year again. If and when I buy a GPU I will be here asking for advice. My MoBo will do for now.I am 81 and retired.

CPU processing works and although they are slower (and worth fewer points) every bit counts. In fact, many of the projects for either GPUs or for CPUs support COVID studies if that happens to be your interest.
