Re: GPU not folding

Post by Martok »

Hi,

I had the same problem with my NVIDIA GPU 750 TI wasn't folding, - Here is what I did based on what I read from other posts and experimenting with CPU/GPU slots, this is for Windows and be sure it's updated.

I did the following:

1) Updated the drivers to the latest using the NVIDIA Toolset 10.2 - Install ALL of it
2) Check that Opencl libraries have been updated to Ver 2.2.2.0, and reside in System32 and SysWOW64 - date 11/7/2019
2.1) Make sure your GPU is supported, search thru the GPUs.txt file
3) Do the FAHBench to make sure GPU is working, my score was 31
4) Reloaded FA software client, with a "Manual" start
5) Set the CPU slots to 1, more can be added, however watch your temperatures
6) Set GPU to -1
7) Reboot and start the client
8) Set folding power to any level, Light, Medium, Full
9) Check the status on the "Advanced Control Panel" - it should have CPU and GPU listed
10) Start Folding
11) Be sure to check system temperatures, a utility called HWMONITOR is good
12) Check the log that the CPU and GPU have been recognized - should look like this:

22:55:23: <!-- Folding Slots -->
22:55:23: <slot id='0' type='CPU'>
22:55:23: <cpus v='2'/>
22:55:23: </slot>
22:55:23: <slot id='2' type='GPU'/>

I have noticed that the CPUs will start folding 1st, then there is a lag time of 20-40 minutes until the GPU starts, usually due for a wait of WU.

Have PATIENCE because WUs have to be assigned or maybe not available for the GPU.[/b]

Martok

A single CPU slot will work perfectly fine if you dont have a massive number of cores. The reason why your GPU didnt start folding right away is most likely because it wasnt assigned a Work Unit instantly. Which is to be expected since we have a shortage at the moment, see first answer in this thread.

Welcome to the F@H Forum Martok,

While I am glad that you got GPU folding underway, sorry for the hassle.

Normally, this would be the workflow:
1) Update Windows with all updates
2) Download the latest Nvidia Driver as per your GPU from here: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk
3) Install the F@H Software
4) Start the client which will automatically detect the hardware and add a CPU/GPU slot depending on the hardware detected

Regarding the "delay" between the CPU and GPU folding, it could be that the GPU slot took a bit of time to start folding as it had to try a few times to download a WU while the CPU got assigned a WU on the first attempt. Do note that there's a massive demand of GPU WUs and supply is not there yet. Work is underway to ensure that we can meet the demand soon :)

Guys,

Thanks for correcting my post.

I'm going to go back and change it, especially #5 and you are correct just 1 slot is needed, also #8 isn't correct, the power level can be set to "Light", - I went back and tested using those settings just fine.

My intentions were to help and to have a "cookbook" for others to use, because I see so much confusion, and we all desperately want to help.

I have been in computers all my life and this is the most Nobel cause to apply my knowledge, and I have dedicated all my best computers to the cause, and have more computers on the way, and may enlist other's talent, and maybe build a team.

You guys don't have to be sorry about the days I have spent working with this, there's always a learning curve and you guys have done a Herculean job in a short amount of time and should be commended, because at this time there isn't a higher urgency than this.

Also I believe system temperatures should be mentioned and my i7-4790k went to 200 degrees my first night, I had all cores allocated, but that's under control.

Martok

I have a similar but different issue. After installing the latest version, 7.6.9, the status page no longer reported any GPU. I was previously using version 7.5.1 and it was working fine. Uninstalled 7.6.9 and reinstalled 7.5.1 and GPU (RX 5700) was showing up again. Has anyone else had issues of that type with 7.6.9? There appear to be no issues with CPU under either version.

System:
AMD 3900X on x570 based Mobo
RX 5700
Windows 10 Pro with all generally released patches

Welcome to the F@H Forum 4-C,

Please note that it's a known issue for 7.6.9 when performing a fresh installation that the GPU Slot can't be immediately added. To resolve that, I would suggest that you:
Manually download the GPUs.txt file from here: https://apps.foldingathome.org/GPUs.txt (right-click save as GPUs.txt)
Exit the client
Copy the GPUs.txt file from the Downloads folder to %AppData%\FAHClient
Reboot your system
Start up the client and ensure that you can see your GPU in the log file
Add a GPU slot from FAHControl -> Configure -> Slots tab -> Add -> GPU -> OK -> Save

This bug will be addressed in the next release of the client.

However, if you perform an in-place upgrade from 7.5.1 to 7.6.9, the GPU Slot would work fine.

Help please, I have 2 old computers folding simultaneusly at home.

1) Old laptop: Core i 5 (old generation) + Nvidia geforce 610M integratet. Both folding fine: CPU and GPU
2) Old HP Desktop: Core 2 Duo 3GHz, 4 GB RAM, Nvidia geforce GT 710 (bought this week!) and Windows 10 - 32bits. GPU folding fine and GPU never folding (!). The GPU statts always is "Ready" and its Work Queue is always "Download" at 0,00%. This is my log:

Re: GPU not folding

Post by PantherX »

Welcome to the F@H Forum Enrique Corella,

Please note that based on this message in your log file, I would say that it seems your GPU is setup correctly. However, there's a huge demand for GPU WUs and the supply is not able to keep up. Work is being done to fix this so just leave your client running and it will automatically pick up a GPU WU.
