Computer hangs while folding

Post by TheBeerJoo »

So I'm lost here. I've tried a few things but I can't get it to work right. Start folding, and it seems I can't make it 5 minutes without my computer hanging. And it never comes back. I let it run for 6 hours after it hung once and I had to reset the computer to get it back.

Anyone have any ideas of what I need to be looking at or where to start?

Is system overclocked ? Is the PSU powerful enough ? Did you clean your heatsinks and fans ? How old is your computer ?

Don't have any heatsinks. Went liquid a long time ago and never looked back. Temps are stable at 33C on the CPU and 55C on the GPU. No overclocking.

System -
CPU: AMD FX-8350
GPU: R9 290
MB ASUS M5A97
RAM 8 gb sof Patriot G2....it's older....like 4-5 years
HDD WD 1TB Blue
PSU CX750M

Have a H60 cooling the CPU and a H80i on the GPU.

Thanks for changing that to 'code' tags. Didn't know that was what they were.

In your log, I see that you run two slots (CPU and GPU) simultaneously. I also that that the CPU core is crashing a lot ...

Can you try to run only one slot at once (pausing the other slot from FAHControl) ?

The other suggestion I have is to try using a CPU setting of 6 (or Medium) and see if the CPU folding stops crashing. It is possible some projects you are getting should be restricted from running on setting of 7, and that was missed during beta testing.

p90xx are fine with odd numbers of cores ... and if it was the issue, the whole machine would not hang ...

As soon as an article says to download it's repair tool that is when I back out and look elsewhere. Usually it is a scam to grab your wallet somewhere along the line and still leave you with the original problem.

I had limited the cpu to 6, 5, 4, and finally 3 threads and it would still hang, though it would take longer. I guess I could just cut the CPU from folding altogether and be fine.

Did you run some stability tests (StressCPU v2 for the CPU, Memtest86 for the RAM, ...) ?

Haven't run a stability test on the CPU yet actually. Meant to but never did after I bought it a few weeks ago. I'll run those and see where it gets me.

Ran stability tests overnight. Nothing odd came of it. Ran memtest on the RAM and it all checked out.

Cut the CPU slot out and it's folding on the GPU alone now and doing just fine.

What did you use to test your CPU stability ? I still suspect that something is wrong with it ... try StressCPU v2 from here : https://folding.stanford.edu/home/download-utilities/

I did initially run StressCPU v2, but I read through the readme and he doesn't have a version the supports x64 without compiling. Ran Prime95, and still running it again, and it caused a failure in cores 7 and 8. Poked around, and figured it was a BIOS issue on the MB as I've never updated it (if it's not broke don't fix it). Reflashed the BIOS to the newest version and running Prime95 on all cores without a failure for about 2 hours now.

Thanks.

I can recomment IntelBurnTest which hits the CPU harder than Prime95 and so fails faster. But 2 hours Prime95 looks good also.
