Win11 Folding Client preventing Monitor sleep at lock screen since 22H2 update

Post by VxJasonxV »

Hey folks,

Anyone else running Windows 11, or possibly Windows 10 fully upgraded to 22H2? In the last week or so my screen no longer blanks on the Windows Lock Screen so my monitors no longer go to sleep. Suffice to say, I run Folding "On Idle".

When running powercfg with a typical running state of apps before locking my computer and walking away, the only thing listed is FAH:

Code: Select all

PS> powercfg -requests
DISPLAY:
None.

SYSTEM:
[DRIVER] Legacy Kernel Caller
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume5\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient\FAHClient.exe

AWAYMODE:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume5\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient\FAHClient.exe

EXECUTION:
None.

PERFBOOST:
None.

ACTIVELOCKSCREEN:
None.
I don't think this is a FAH bug, I'm still running 7.6.21 as I have been for months. However, I do think it is an updated Windows power management behavior bug that FAH is catalyzing.

I'm not even sure that Folding is starting on the lock screen because I shut off my PC last time in frustration, but tonight I'll lock the screen, turn off the monitors, and check the log tomorrow.

I am correct that Folding isn't even starting;

Code: Select all

That network error is interesting but probably irrelevant, and needless to say this log starts just about 23 hours ago and Folding never even started in the ~16 hours this PC was idle and at the lock screen. So I'm going to have to manually manage starting it as the last thing I do before I lock the system now.

Help?

Re: Win11 Folding Client preventing Monitor sleep at lock screen since 22H2 update

Hi VxJasonxV,

I’m sorry to hear this is happening. It sounds similar to the issue mentioned in this Windows article, namely “Because of this, Windows will not power off my screen automatically, and the computer won’t go to sleep automatically” (Source: https://www.windowslatest.com/2022/10/2 ... wn-issues/ )

I just upgraded to Windows 11 22H2 too. However, I can’t reproduce this.

My system uses very similar GPUs in the form of twin Nvidia Titan RTX (NVLink enabled). I am running Windows 11 Pro for Workstations Build 22621.819 (November 2022 security updates are installed). I am using the 526.98 Nvidia Studio driver. The specs of my system are shown in my forum profile (which should be visible to the right of this post).

Within the FAH client, my folding setting is set to “Full”

Similar to you I leave the system idling and folding when I’m not there. However with the system locked (Windows key + L) the system continued to fold. My screen is set to turn off after 15 minutes, when it did so it didn’t interrupt the folding.

My GPUs both worked on project 18601 https://stats.foldingathome.org/project/18601 and had a time per frame (TPF) of 1:20 earning approximately 1 million points from 2 submitted work units. I am using the power profile known as “Ultimate Performance” within Windows. This is included with the Pro for Workstations version of Windows 11 (and previously 10) by default rather than needing to be enabled manually:

https://www.howtogeek.com/368781/how-to ... indows-10/

I hope the above information may help with narrowing down the cause for you. Thanks.

I believe KB5012170 or KB5020044 fixed this.
