Welcome to the folding@home support forum.

That can & often does happen when you shut down the computer without pressing the Pause button (in FAHControl aka Advanced). Basically, if you shutdown without pausing, the client could be in the middle of writing data. Folding needs time to shutdown properly (30 secs is usually plenty ... it will print "paused" in the log) before you turn off computer (use the o/s shutdown ... i.e. don't just press the power button).

There are other reasons but that is the most common one.

Most common reason seen when using Windows. Windows sends the shutdown signal, but often does not wait long enough for the client to stop processing and finish writing any files before killing the processes and shutting down. Seen less often with Linux and OS X clients.
