Settings for using a GeForce 525M & Linux

Post by DellXPS15zP12f »

Hi,

I had heaps of trouble getting my GPU to run work units as the FAH client couldn't find the openCL client on my pc. The issue i was having was shown in the log as "OpenCL device matching slot 1 not found, try setting 'opencl-index' manually"

Recommendations were to goto the 'Configure' menu, 'Expert' tab and add a 'opencl-index=-1' or 'opencl-index=0' string. But this was incorrect, the answer was to add a GPU slot into the 'Slots' tab with the following settings:

gpu-index = 0
opencl-index = 0
cuda-index = -1

The only drawback here is the folding speed is very slow. The current work unit is taking 24 hours to complete so i may attempt to run the next work unit on the CPU.

My specs are as follows:
PC type: Laptop
Brand: Dell
Model: 15z (P12f)
CPU: Intel i7-2620M @ 2.7Ghz
Graphics: Both Intel HD and Geforce 525M 2GB
OS: Linux Mint 19
Drivers: Nvidia drivers version 390.***

Hopefully this info helps anyone else with the same PC specs in linux mint.

525M is not a speed demon. With the way current GPU work units are designed, your GPU will be struggling. If you think your GPU will not finish its work before the deadline, it would be best to use just CPU.
Today's GPU work units are more suited to discreet GPUs, as they are not handicapped by lower cuda core count or memory subsystem :)

This is going to bite you. What Nvidia has done is use the Intel until there is high load then switch to the more powerful and power hungry 525M.

Your problem will be that F@H does not support Intel graphics and either won't start or will crash.

In the Nvidia Control panel, in 3D settings maybe a way to disable the intel graphics. Leaving you with a hot, noisy laptop.

Oops it is worse than that.
Your card does not support OpenCL 1.2, so can't run F@H.

FAH should be able to see sleeping 525M. And as OP said that it was folding, but slow, that means, fah did see it. Once 525M is folding, nothing from intel will be able to take over :)

OpenCL 1.2 is required. I'm marking the 525m as unsupported.

Came back to to reply and inform that the card was taking so long to fold it isn't suitable for folding as noted above.
