5700XT poor PPD?

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

5700XT poor PPD?

Post by apeman »

Newbie here and not finding much in my searching. My 5700 XT is reporting ~100 KPPD. I get the impression from other forums that this is pretty low, and I should expect in excess of 1 MPPD. Thoughts?

Welcome to the folding support forum.

From what is shown of your log, you have not entered a passkey to get bonus points. On a fast GPU those are the majority of the points coming from the Quick Return Bonus.

Ah, thanks. Done. Looks like now tho there's no work available for my card so I'll have to wait to verify performance is as expected.

PPD is up to 550K now. Does this sound right? I'm mainly concerned with ensuring my card is performing optimally.

That sounds in the right range. Exact performance will depend on the WU, those with more atoms will load your GPU more fully and also result in a higher PPD.

That doesn't sound right at all. I'm at 1.1M with a 5700xt nitro+ and I still think it's low.

On AMD GPUs, it depends on the project you got. Project with low number of atom will show 600-700k PPD while those with many atoms will be above 1M PPD.

@apeman Did you remember to change the gpu workload from gaming to compute in the global graphics settings? Hows the temps look? With these new Adrenaline2020 drivers I had to create a fan profile bumping up the minimum speed to get the temp below 60c on my FuryX. Not only had a bit of throttling at first I had a wu fail because my temp hit 63/64c.

On BOINC I never saw any benefit from Compute mode so didn't bother. Temps were <70. But I ended up returning the 5700XT. For three weeks I couldn't get it to stop crashing, even sometimes getting POST errors. The 5700XT is still having problems I've learned, as are the drivers. So I don't know to what degree folding might've been impacted. Running a 2060 Super now at 1.2M last I saw. Waiting for work now tho due to the server being overwhelmed again.

1) We're not BOINC, so there may be good reasons for the differences you see.
2) Maybe your 5700XT hardware is defective.
3) Maybe the paths in your case where cooling air circulates or a fah has been compromised.

If the problem was solved by installing a new GPU, I'm not going to worry about it.

Sounds like a lemon of a card good thing you returned it while you could. Enjoy your 2060!

I've actually learned that it remains a very common problem particularly affecting the XT. The regular 5700 doesn't seem to have the issue, except the ongoing problems with the drivers AMD has not been able to resolve. I'll have to revisit the card at a later time if only because it's aesthetically more pleasing in my new rig.

My non-XT 5700 has been consistently doing ~850k PPD. It does seem a bit low given the card's raw stats, but I guess that's just how it is. I have kept mine set to 'gaming' instead of 'compute' because I still play games on my PC regularly. Another datapoint for ya.
