More Folding Lost

Post by RMouse »

Not sure what happened here. I was in the upper 90's%, nearly finished with a WU when I had to pause it for a second. When I restarted a few minutes later, I no longer saw it being worked on. It says I was past the final deadline, which is very confusing. I have had this computer folding 23 hours a day, every day. Why would I be given a WU that I could not complete with virtually 100% uptime? And why would my computer work all the way up to 92% or so and then dump it? Seems like an awfully wasteful way to work. Can someone help me understand this? Thanks.

When was it downloaded?
From the log I see that the WU in question was Project 10502 (Run 489, Clone 0, Gen 427), am I right?
It has a deadline of 12 days http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/fah ... ed?p=10502

The assignment server doesn't know how fast your machine is. Most of the time it is up to the user to decide if the machine can complete a WU or not.

I am not sure when it started. I didnt notice my computer working on the same WU for 12 days. I'll have to pay more close attention. Since it finished the last 20% or so today, I doubt it was working on this WU for 12 days. I have no idea what is going on.

How can I properly evaluate a WU so that I only get what my machine is capable of?

EDIT: I looked at my log and see that I started this WU on either 7/9 or 7/10 of this month. So it did not take me 12 days to finish this.

Your TPF was around 23 minutes. Which means the WU should be completed in about 40 hours. I'm not sure why yours expired.

Well you can try adding the option "max-packet-size : small". I've never tried that myself, but it might work.

Can you explain this better. What is the theory behind it and how do I make this change? Thanks very much for your help.

"max-packet-size : small" makes your client download small units. It's more about the download size rather than the processing time, but as I said it might work.

Some useful options :
http://www.overclock.net/t/979691/info- ... ed-options
and
https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/F ... ncesV6ToV7

And here's how to add these options http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinGuide#ntoc9

Limiting the max packet size would be good if the deadlines were close, but apparently that isn't the case. Plus if you are able fold bigger work then you should IMO.

RMouse, it might be a good idea to post the section of the log where the WU was actually downloaded so we can make verifications and whatnot. It should be close to where you found the second section of the log you posted since the WU was only at 9% there

Well honestly I would wait until someone more experienced can help you with your problem since I'm pretty stumped on this one and I may be leading you on a wild goose chase here :e?:. But if you want, you can still follow my directions and maybe learn something ;)

If you decide to let me keep trying to help, there should be past logs stored in the FAH directory. You should be able to find them here (you should be able to copy and past this into an explorer address bar since I modified it a little): C:\Documents and Settings\name\Application Data\FAHClient\logs. Or go to "Start Menu", "All Programs", "FAH Client", "Data Directory", then "logs". There will be a lot if you have been folding for a long time. They go in order of dates (log-YYYYMMDD-...), so look for something that would correspond to the most recent, open it up, start from the bottom and look for something close to "Received Unit: id:00 state:DOWNLOAD error:OK project:5771 run:2 clone:179 gen:1477 core:0x11 unit:0x1a3ba4524fffa19805c500b30002168b" (with the proper PRCG and slot id of course)

Note for future log postings, many like to have log postings placed in code tags so the log doesn't make the thread page unnecessarily long

Thanks for all your help! Let's wait and see what others think. The work is lost so there is no urgency here.

WU 10502 is the one in question. Is this the one you are talking about here? Was in reality not lost?

The V7 folding client does keep a folder of past logs in the same directory as the current log. The filename gets modified with a timestamp. By default the V7 client keeps the last 16 logs in that folder.

If one is old enough, look to see if the WU downloaded either in part or completely and exited before. The assignment servers do keep track of WU's assigned to a machine and will resend them back to you later. The timeouts do go from initial assignment, so it is possible it was assigned to you first 12 days ago and then given to you again if it was not returned then.

P.S. As I recall, you are folding on a Windows machine. I recall from the time I was doing some folding on my son's Mac Pro booted into Windows 7 that the folder where the logs, etc. are kept is in a "hidden" folder named .FAHClient.
