Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 not able to fold [fixed in GPUs.txt]

Post by Swiftdeathz »

I tried entering it into the GPUs.txt whitelist to no avail. My device ID per GPU-Z is: 1002-6818

I tried entering this into the GPUs.txt file, please advise if my syntax is incorrect:

0x1002:0x6818:::AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series

Update on my issue. I now placed the GPUs.txt file in the FAHClient work directory (the one which has FAHControl.db) and now the latest beta does see my GPU when I added the following to the GPUs.txt :

0x1002:0x6818:::AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series

Now instead of not finding a GPU in the System Info tab, it now shows the following:

GPU 0 UNSUPPORTED: AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series

So when I try to add a folding slot, it just gives the unsupported message and fails to add the new slot.

Just curious but if you change the description to:

Radeon HD 7870

and pause your smp client, quit FAHControl and restart FAHControl does if make any difference?

I can't see why it would but curiosity makes me ask. :e?:

@bollix47 I tried your suggestion but it still shows Unsupported and when trying to add a new GPU slot I get the same error message as before:
On client "local" 127.0.0.1:36330: No more GPUs
@7im That's exactly what I followed to even get FAH 7.1.52 to even see my card, I added the following to my GPUs.txt using my device ID etc:
0x1002:0x6818:::Radeon HD 7870
The problem currently is that even though after adding my device ID to GPUs.txt and now the client seeing my GPU, it shows as UNSUPPORTED and I can't fold on the GPU.

I'm patient though and I'll wait till a new client or core or whatever is needed to get it working gets released, just thought I'd share my issues/experiences.

Thanks for trying that. I was pretty sure it wouldn't make much difference but stranger things have happened. :ewink:

One other thing occurs to me. When you installed the appropriate catalyst drivers from AMD did you install all the components that they offered? I'm just wondering if something the client is looking for is not present and because it's missing the gpu is considered unsupported.

I installed the latest drivers for my 7870 which is the 12.3 official WHQL version and they do come with OpenCL drivers. I installed all the components that come with the driver pack. I didn't install optional component drivers which I don't use such as HydraVision or the Media Codec package, but I never have installed these with my previous card (an XFX Radeon HD 5830) so I don't think this is the problem.

If I look at the entries for other HD 7XXX, they look like:
0x1002:0x6798:1:5:Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970]
0x1002:0x677b:1:5:Caicos [Radeon HD 7400 Series]

I think that the 1 and 5 somehow describe what the cards are able to fold.
Just look at all the older cards, wich do not have numbers between the colons. And the newer the card, the higher the second number.
So maybe you try that?

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried the above and entered the following for my card:

So perhaps that tells the client/server as you suggested, what the card is capable of folding, but it can't pull any wu's as of yet? I tried with client-type advanced as well as with no additional flags and it still fails to download any WU's. But with all your help I appear to be heading in the right direction toward some day being able to fold with this new card. :D

I'm sorry to hear that you're still having problems.
I think http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 58&start=0 is related to this problem.
Basically it says, look at the serverstats page to see if there are WU available for the server in question.

I did a ping to assign-gpu.stanford.edu, wich resolved in 171.67.108.201 and looked for that server on http://fah-web.stanford.edu/serverstat.html
In column "WUs avail" it says 0, so I guess that server currently really hasn't got anything to give out.

Hopefully that changes soon!

Oh, and if you finally get the card to work I am very much interested in hearing about its performance!
Any link to some other sources would be great too, especially for the performance of the 7770.

Thanks again ProfBoom, it didn't occur to me to check if the server was having issues. I figured perhaps it was just something going on with the new client + new GPU etc. I'll be sure to post some PPD numbers when I get it going.

Well, I just got an assignment for my HD 5770, assign-GPU.stanford.edu just seems to point you to another server, wich then gives you the WU.
I really was wondering why they should be out of WUs for ATI...

You should follow 7im's second link and report the HD7870 there to be added to the whitelist.

Editing (hacking) the GPUs.txt file will never work. The master copy is on the server. You are not authorized to add devices which have not yet been approved by Stanford.

Understood Bruce, thanks for the detailed explanation. I saw 7im opened a ticket so it's just a matter of waiting for them to update their GPUs.txt and I should be able to start getting some WU's. :D

Just an update, my 2 cards are now supported in the new GPUs.txt file which I just downloaded. I added advanced client-type flag and it pulled 2 11293 wu's right away.

It's folding at around 7300-7800 ppd each card with SMP2 from my quad core.
