According to GPU Z temp is at 76C after running FAH for about 15 minutes. It started at 71C and climbed a bit but has been holding steady at the 76C for about 5 minutes now.
Driver reads: nviddmkm 8.17.12.6658 (ForceWare 266.58)/Win7 64
GPU Clock 675 MHz
Default Clock 680 MHz

HendricksSA wrote:Fahrenheit451, are you able to process 1011x work units? If so, do you have any idea about the shader count on your card vs. AnnmarieD's? I usually just assume the 8xxx series cards are older cards and therefore compute 1.0 devices. However, I've got PantherX to keep me honest and I will have to do my homework in the future. I'm wondering if the 8xxx series cards are having problems with the bigger work units?
Yes, I can process 1011x WU's (according to HFM.net benchmark viewer I had 10110, 10111, 10112 and 10117 WU's).

My card has 128 Unified shaders while Annmaries seems to have only 32 (see the Wikipedia link in my first post). The 8xxx series is old, the 8600 GT was released in April 2007 and my 8800 GTS 512 in December 2007. You can find a link to the GPU-Z screenshot for my card in my profile. According to nvidia's OpenCL programming guide (http://developer.download.nvidia.com/co ... _Guide.pdf, Appendix A) my card has Compute Capability 1.1 as well as the 8600 GT.

AnnmarieD: Give the older client (6.23 console) a try. I assume it will work better than the 6.41.

If you want to stop Windows from automatically installing drivers, you can read this (http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-ti ... ows-vista/ and http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-card ... stall.html). Personally, when I uninstalled the drivers, windows did install the default and then I installed the latest ones and it ran without any issue.

Step 1: Delete everything related to the F@H GPU Client:
For Systray Version:
Step A: Press Windows Key + R to open Run window
Step B: Type this %APPDATA% (with the % sign) and press enter
Step C: A window will appear (C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\ OR C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\) and there you have to delete a folder called "Folding@Home-gpu"
Step D: Delete any shortcuts you have made
Note: Make sure that you delete the FahCore_xx, queue.dat and work folder as incorrect version\type will cause problems and won't allow your F@h GPU Client to function normally

Step 2: Uninstall the Nvidia Drivers and CUDA Toolkit

Step 3:Install Driver Sweeper (Don't run it yet)

Step 4: Boot into Safe Mode and run Driver Sweeper to remove any remnants of Nvidia Drivers if they exist

Step 5: Boot into Windows (normal) and install the appropriate Nvidia Driver. I would suggest that you try 250 series (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvi ... river.html) instead of 260 Series

Step 6: Download the GPU2 Console Version Client (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegrou ... ta-623.zip)

Step 7: You make a folder in C:\F@H GPU2 and run it from there just like you did with the Classic Console Version.

I am downloading the items in steps 5 & 6 - I already have Drive Sweeper.
Then I will print out the post and follow it step by step and post back ASAP.
Wish me luck. :)

Followed the instructions to a T and here is my log - UNSTABLE MACHINE :-(

FYI - this is the console version as stated.
Still running ...
Maybe the systray version will work ?

Re: Having issues with GPU client

Post by PantherX »

If this is the console version, why did you place it the Program Files? Please place it in C:\F@H GPU or another Drive. The reason is that UAC may cause some issues if it is present in the Program Files.

I followed these instructions as I did when I installed the CPU clients : http://fahwiki.net/index.php/How_do_I_i ... newbies%29
I have no UAC issues with those but since this is glitchy I will uninstall and make a folder as you posted and begin again.
Will post back shortly.

Re: Having issues with GPU client

Post by AnnmarieD »

I am keeping the window open for a few days until I am comfortable with the install. Will report back if things go awry but I have a good feeling about this.
Thank you so much for your help.
I am glad that all the effort is finally going somewhere.

Not now - but in a few days - I sort of need a reminder as to how to have this star tup with Windows like the CPU clients do without having to have the black DOS window open.
For now I am keeping it open and running.

BTW - for some reason my computer is running faster than it was when I had the systray version.

I do know it needs to be closed properly through the Task Manager.

Fine. Good luck for your further folding. But according to the client download page it is not possible to run FAH as a service under Win Vista/7. So you will have to live with the Shell window for the GPU client.

That is going to be a problem. This computer is not for my exclusive use and while it takes not time or bother to simply minimize the client window to the taskbar it will, at some point of the day, be closed down improperly but one or more other people using this computer.
I will have to install the systray version.

Also of note - my CPU temp rose dramatically during the night. I noticed it about 3 am NY time. I removed the side of the case and setup a small fan blowing into the case. I will have rearrange my setup so more airflow gets into the case. It is under a desk and must remain there. With a bit of maneuvering I can solve the heat issue but not the console version shutdown issue.

I will wait for this unit to finish and then have at it again.
