Re: Many GPUs on one machine

I have noticed if I wanted a really fast card, AMD are severely lacking. I'm using AMD because their 2nd hand ones are cheap. If I had to pay for the electricity, I might buy different ones. But I'm using the output to heat the house anyway, so who cares? :-)

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

12 old Tahiti GPUs, Radeon R9 280X, you can get them dirt cheap on Ebay. I don't want to buy overpriced newer ones. 10 computers of various types, two decent 24 core Ryzens, the rest are old stuff I made from parts. The GPUs are connected with USB mining risers. They break sometimes, I dismantle the...

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

That's cheap electricity. If I bought it from the grid I'd be paying about £20,000 a year.

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

On Folding, I can run three 280X cards per riser. If your GPU is faster than three 280X cards combined, it will be limited to the speed of three 280X cards. Faster cards should either be plugged in directly, or using a ribbon (directly passes all lanes), or use Boinc (most of their projects don't ne...

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

My setup is nothing special, just a number of basic tower cases with GPUs sat on the shelf next to them. I use this sort of thing to connect them: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145392436570 or https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333915444816 (those are the first I found, not necessarily the cheapest). For foldi...

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

Not sure any case or motherboard takes 4 cards unless you're talking about removing the aircoolers and watercooling them. I connect mine with USB mining risers so I can sit them next to the case.

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

Like I said, electricity can be very cheap or even free after some initial outlay. Don't follow the rest of the world and just buy it from the grid, make your own! 90% cheaper! And once it's there, you might aswell use all of it. It also provides heating, so if you're heating the house anyway, does ...

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

I buy by specs. Price vs clock speed. The pretty colours don't sway me.
Power can be cheap if you pick your source.
12 year old GPUs can be very cheap.

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

I have 12 different Tahiti (280X) cards by different makes. About 5 different heatsink arrangements. Direct CUII for example. Every single one achieves the same temperature. The only difference is some run at a slightly different clock speed (not sure how some can do it and some don't, they're all 1...

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

How would it be a selling feature? "This card comes supplied with non-cooled RAM!"

I assume if you can find exactly what the problem is, you could play with the voltages in the BIOS.

Re: Fast GPU, not enough CPU power to keep up?

RAM can be difficult. This board (or CPU? It's a 3900XT) went a bit silly (much crashing) when I put more than 2 sticks in. I had to lower the clock speed to 2/3rds. But I found I could lower (which is faster) the CAS by the same amount, so the memory is the same speed. Just the MB/CPU/VRM didn't li...

ETA nonsensical after reboot

If you reboot the computer, it shows the ETA to be something like 40 seconds instead of 2 hours. Looks like it's thinking the 65% already completed before rebooting took only a minute, when actually it was just reading it from the checkpoint.
