Does extra cache of 5800X3D benefit folding or not?
The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D has an extra layer of cache stacked on top of the CPU, which does benefit performance in some games and applications, but has a tradeoff of lower peak clock speeds, which means worse performance than the 5800X in other applications. The statistics gathered so far by the dark ...

Re: How legit is uptodown folding@home? [Not legit]
Unfortunately no - when you run a simulation you need the whole molecule or at least as much of it as the researcher want to simulate. You'll have to find some other project, e.g. in BOINC for those smaller computers.

Re: Q9450 and RX480
Cloud GPU hire via Vast.ai was actually an "economical" way to fold a couple of years ago, depending on your local power costs, before crypto and GPU scarcity made it too expensive to be worth it. The most efficient way to contribute now, perhaps, is to fold when you need heating, and just...

Re: FahCore and FAHClient running with root privileges
Please don't run old versions of the client, due to security. See the solution further up in the thread for how to run the client as the fahclient user rather than root.leloft wrote:Found solution for the issue about root privileges. I uninstalled v7.6.21 and installed v7.6.13 and rebooted.

Re: Ghost fahcore_22
First stop the service with e.g. sudo /etc/init.d/FAHClient stop sudo killall FAHClient (the second is in case the service launcher is broken) Maybe copy the file /etc/fahclient/config.xml to a safe location to make sure your passkey and configuration is saved, but this might not be that important -...

Re: Could we add a timed pause to the client?
The problem will arise if you have many such programs which you want to pause FAH while running, as there is no coordination between unpause and pause commands, but if only Zoom is the issue, then the above is a great and simple solution.

Re: canot abort unit
Perhaps you can post the relevant parts of the log? 2: You can try deleting the slot that is running the WU, watch the client dump it, and re-creating the slot afterwards. 3: No it shouldn't, because otherwise people would be habitually dumping WUs if they don't like the PPD projection, to get more ...

Re: FAHcontrol not connecting (windows 10)
The client process should start when you log in - it's not supposed to wait until you start FAHControl. Have you installed it normally? Search for the FAHClient process in task manager. See if there's a program called "HideConsole" in the Windows startup items - it's what is supposed to st...

Re: agri-food WU
If Ukraine and Russia's grain harvest can't come in on schedule this year, we are looking at a global food crisis. Also the prizes of fertilizer have at least doubled due to higher prices of gas and energy - an important input to fertilizer production. Personally I'm fine with folding for food relat...

You remember to restart the client every time to you change the network access settings? I think they don't apply until restart.

Re: when u catch 'em using F@H as a benchmark
PPD (points per day) is a fairly good number for checking if your system is a good folding rig, but PPD is a terrible benchmark for A-B comparisons of systems and configurations, because the PPD is very dependent on how quickly you return the WU and the Quick Return Bonus, as well as variance betwee...

Re: Future of OpenCL vs. Vulkan and F@H?
For anyone with special interest, or even Molecular Dynamics simulation knowledge, you can read the updates to this pull request. Seems they're still making some adjustments to the folding code, so there's no time estimate for when AMD HIP support becomes available in F@H, but they're making progres...

Re: Task jumps to 70% immediately
If I'm restarting the machine, I don't finish the WU but I tend to wait until a checkpoint occurs, so every 5% or 2% of a GPU WU.

Re: Task jumps to 70% immediately
I have never heard of that happening. What can happen, though, is that if your client already has downloaded a new WU - for a second GPU or because you're almost finished with a WU, and you pause the client, it will start folding the newest WU instead of completing the one you've already started. If...
