Re: Point inflation - Longevity Credit

Though it's actually more tech advancement, the idea is kind of good. When I look at the EOC stats and see people still plugging along with older gear but massive WU counts and/or reasonably high points, it makes me reflect on how much money some might have spent to get to that point on the older an...

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

I'd hate to see that power bill vs points comparision! Yikes! But your example makes my point. All those different cooling solutions end up at about the same temp, maybe slightly different clock speeds means some of them cool a little bit better, but not much. But there are probably a lot of cases w...

Re: folding starts fast, then slows down after a minute

Some of the new gear is too efficiency oriented, and it makes folding a bit more complex to set up. But glad you are figuring it out, there is nothing like thinking you are losing available performance.

Re: Many GPUs on one machine

People fall for all kinds of flashy stuff that serves no purpose. There is probably a lot of stuff computer related that falls into that category. Does that heat sink actually help cooling or not? Short of testing, most of us will never know, but it LOOKS like it might help cooling, so people buy it.

Re: folding starts fast, then slows down after a minute

Many systems won't stay at boost clocks long, and F@H is a unique use and demanding on CPU. Many systems will throttle to prevent damage, in some cases partly due to things like fan settings, in some cases it's something you can't avoid. It is a longer and harder load as compared to a lot of other n...

Re: folding starts fast, then slows down after a minute

Your answers might lie in the software suggested above. You could also use Windows Task Manager Performance tab to see if the loads are changing in any significant way during that time period in question. With the change being that quick, it could be that Windows is still loading various background ...

Re: Donor Statistics

I'm not sure if F@H has ever done a survey on users, but years back there was a paper on the statistics of the types of people that fold. I think part of the problem would be if people have quit folding (regardless of the reason) then they might not see or respond to a survey on why they quit. But t...

Re: client offline time or calculation time window ?

Timeouts very by project, and is the preferred completion time window. . https://apps.foldingathome.org/psummary Minimal time folding meeting those time out deadlines might be difficult. This depends on the hardware you have to use and how fast it is, along with what species it falls into and the si...

Re: Donor Statistics

You have new enough gear that if you fold 24/7 you can produce more points than most folders, but the crazy thing is as you go through the ranks you have to catch up to others producing at the same level.... so you don't. You eventually pass others going slower, but some of them have been folding so...

Re: Donor Statistics

Hardware advances have fueled most of the numbers you see. You have to keep in mind that F@H is over 20 years old, and initial work units produced less than a point. Even those that spent top dollar on hardware weren't producing many points, even if they folded 24/7. These days even gear considered ...

Interesting that it just hung like that until it timed out. In any case, if you get continued problems you should report them, since it's a benchmarking project and looking for any possible issues.

Re: Projevt 17118 on 4090

How do I get my machine to stop jamming up on this project? It might be worth showing more of your log. I can see the last line you posted, and assume it crashed after that, but the why and/or the specifics might be down further in the log. If it doesn't go beyond that point and just restarts at le...

Re: Folding@Home makes Steam take ages to launch

If your Steam games run fine once you get the client loaded and you can take the performance hit on the games and/or the folding, I'd suggest just pause folding before you load the client. This should allow it to load at regular speed and then you can start folding again after the Steam client is lo...

Re: Switch preference to Parkinsons for highest PPD

Some are claiming that HIP will give a huge boost to AMD for folding and certain other things. Of course it's always soon.... when soon is nobody knows. :?: TBH I didn't even look at any AMD stuff when GPU prices dropped a little last year and I grabbed one. The lack of driver updates and support al...

Re: missing points from all projects 19600 since yesterday

Hopefully they got them all, but HFM would tell you for sure. Either way, your long term contributions are appreciated. That's a lot of years of folding, and hardly worth tossing away even if some points didn't credit. Though I didn't fold long term, I did a little when the project was in it's infan...
