Re: FAHControl not installable in new Debian stable (Bullsey
Actually, python 2 is no longer necessary, at least on Ubuntu 20.04.3. I have suspected that for some time, since I have been able to re-install FAH 7.6.21 on machines where only python 3 was active. But they had had python 2 previously installed, so I could not be sure whether it left some part of ...

Folding is doing its own thing.

I am immensely impressed. John Chodera and all the other researchers at Folding (several contributed both CPU and GPU work) and around the world have done amazing things.

Re: Deep learning post
All very interesting, but the advent of quantum computing may make it irrelevant. And if we don't go to carbon-free power generation in a few years, the lack of machine learning support will be the least of our problems.

Re: 18401 - Optout
Good questions. As I said, it is on all 32 (virtual) cores/threads; I am not running the GPU now due to the heat. TOP shows 3178% CPU utilization. And it is water cooled by a two-fan Arctic water cooler, and Tdie shows 63 C, so it is not down-clocking due to temperature. I have used a 3900X occasion...

Re: 18401 - Optout
P 18401 is taking 32 hours on all 32 cores of my Ryzen 3950X (Ubuntu 20.04.3).
That gives it something to do.

Re: Ryzen 9 3900X @ 97C
I have occasionally run Folding on my Ryzen 3900X (Ubuntu 20.04.2), and even with the supplied air cooler, it ran only about 90C. I have since replaced that with an ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 120 (single fan) AIO water cooler, and now get about 80C. But that is in a basement where the temps do not get...

Re: FahCore returned: FAILED_3 (255 = 0xff)
Thanks, but it is working fine now. I just had to re-install FAH, after doing an Ubuntu update.
If it needed to update the drivers, it did so without problem.
And, as I stated, the problem started before I did any updates.

Re: FahCore returned: FAILED_3 (255 = 0xff)
With my ubuntu system I found that when I wanted to do maintenance I had to ensure it had finished and uploaded all of its work. After running the system 24/7 for a couple of months I found that a simple reboot would break the system. I think the system would install certain updates while running b...

FahCore returned: FAILED_3 (255 = 0xff)
EDIT0: This probably should be under some other topic. Move it if necessary. I am getting a lot of work units with this error. I expect a reboot will fix it, but here is the log thus far: 01:08:57:WU01:FS01:Starting 01:08:57:WU01:FS01:Running FahCore: /bin/FAHCoreWrapper /var/snap/folding-at-home-f...

I think the short answer is yes. But John Chodera gives the authoritative answer.

Re: can't get new wu from all assignment server
At the same time over at WCG they are also running low on GPU jobs. Also cpu jobs are getting scarce as well here and there, so it looks like folders are out pacing scientist everywhere. Maybe i should do some mining in the meantime. That is very true. But there are still some worthwhile CPU projec...

How the ‘Alpha’ Coronavirus Variant Became So Powerful
Alpha’s swift success has left scientists wondering how the variant conquered the world. A new study points to one secret to its success: Alpha disables the first line of immune defense in our bodies, giving the variant more time to multiply. “It’s very impressive,” said Dr. Maudry Laurent-Rolle, a...

OK, where are we? I know they are an academic consortium, but what state are they in? I can look at the PostEra COVIC Moonshot website, but that does not tell me much. I think the news announcement about industry collaboration was very encouraging https://foldingathome.org/2021/04/20/ma ... aborator...

Re: Chip shortage will affect PCs, and GPUs
The prices on the Ryzen 5000 series are beginning to ease, and I expect will be down to more normal levels by the end of the year.
As for GPUs, they are a different ballgame affected by a lot of factors, but I am not looking to buy until the 5 nm generation anyway.
