Re: Please REMOVE RX560

ARGH! My 4 GPU machine keeps locking up. You can get to hate GPUs. I think the real issue is that your machine is unstable. You don't want to fix it so you make noise about a plethora of other things. Everything is unstable. Turns out one card objected to Folding. Works on Milkyway though. But not ...

Re: Please REMOVE RX560

No, and there is not a direct, linear relationship between FLOPS and processing time for F@h projects. For example, on one project, one GPU might have twice the FLOPS rating as another, but instead of taking half the time may take three quarters. On a different project that GPU might be closer to d...

Re: Please add abort function

I often find I don't want to run the tasks I have. This leads to a practise called cherry picking and has always been forbidden ... so don't expect any option like this to be added to the client. And just why shouldn't I be allowed to devote my resources to cancer only (since my neighbour just died...

Re: Please add abort function

I notice you say "BOINC guys", this may be a clue. F@H had a lone programmer until this last year when they could afford another. He coded the clients, the servers, and the web page. He takes direction from the biochemists, not the volunteers. AFAIK Boinc has ONE programmer who is not pai...

Re: Please add abort function

Might I respectfully suggest that given your posts which have been critical of the FaH software and that detail how it doesn't work in the way you like whereas Boinc does that perhaps utilising your kit to simply run Boinc might be a solution and cause you less stress? There's no biology on GPU in ...

Re: Please REMOVE RX560

BOINC tasks have an "estimated number of flops" with each one. Do your servers know that number already? If so the volunteer's computer could work out how many flops it does on each project by experience, or just an average of any project, so between the client and server they'd know the r...

Please add abort function

I often find I don't want to run the tasks I have. Perhaps they downloaded by mistake (the software is pretty keen - especially as it lacks something important between pause-on-start and not - the same as it was before reboot!), perhaps they will take too long, or the machine is going to soon be tur...

Re: Please REMOVE RX560

It does not take 1000 hours to make a program note down the time taken for a task on a GPU, and fill in a database of that info. I'd guess a few hours at most.

Boinc does it. They don't pay their programmers. I refer you to "duration_correction_factor" in the Boinc programming.

Re: Please REMOVE RX560

Saving the manpower of manually making lists of GPUs, surely it's not that hard to make the program time how long each model of GPU takes to run a task? Thousands of hours to add something that simple? You could write the whole program in 1000 hours. Where do they get these "programmers"? ...

Re: Setting to stop CPU slot being re-added?

Contrarywise, I'm saying they and the client should NOT try to read my mind. No assumption should be made. It's like everything these days, computers, phones, even cars assume because you did X you're now wanting Y.

Re: Please REMOVE RX560

Ok, it's a work in progress, but I suggest the client could out the speed based on how long it takes to do a task. The server could even take the average if everyone's x model. That would save a lot of manpower.

Re: Half done tasks destroyed due to card not being there temporarily

Many of the decisions about how the FAHClient works were made long before I started contributing. I'm merely using the client to the best of my understanding. Some of that understanding was gained through doing things, some stupid and other calculated e.g. swapping out GPUs, changing the CPU slot s...

Re: Please REMOVE RX560

Please REMOVE the Radeon RX560, it's too slow (50% of the time) to complete a task in time. Note this card is actually detected as an RX460, which is even slower, so both should be removed. Note - Many of the RX 560 cards are actually a rebranded RX 460, AMD lowered the specification a few months a...

Re: Setting to stop CPU slot being re-added?

Ah, I went back into the settings and it's deleted "cpu false", so that must be an invalid thing to ask of it.
I've also seen them deleted before when I changed gpu to true, quite annoying as it's handy to remember what that setting was!
I guess one day they'll make all this intuitive....
