Re: Restarted Folding
I know folding is not recommended on a MacBookAir, it has no fan to control temperature. I have an M2 Air that is folding on its 4 Performance Cores. Don’t worry about the lack of a fan, the machine will throttle CPU if necessary to maintain a safe operating temperature. Propping up the rear of the...

Re: ERROR:Guru Meditation
Guru Meditation Error is something we used to see on the Amiga when it had a system crash back in the day. I didn’t realize it found its way into Linux systems as well!

Re: How long is the data about old WU's retained?
I'm seeing 167 days worth of work under my Units tab, less than 6MB of log files.
So that would be about 12MB/year for this CPU WUs-only machine. So I’m not too concerned personally, but if you’re doing GPU work, I could see this eventually becoming a problem?

Re: Details under machine not visible
Have you tried clicking your Account icon on the upper right and then choosing the Appearance tab — you should be able to customize your view for your Machines browser page there, though it’s odd that you didn’t get the default view for starters.

Re: F@H 3.3.18 on iMac M4 won't run in background
On fah installation, you have the option to allow folding for all users or only the single current user. Could this be an issue? I’ve always selected “all users” on my Macs, and never seen this problem, even when logged out.

Congrats, calxalot.
These M4 Pro Mini systems are quite the little folding engines.

Re: Thoughts on Apple M chips?
I’m seeing a max ~60db at the back of the Mini, slightly less in front. I don’t have a temp sensor handy, but the case is comfortable to touch; my Mac Studio’s case and exhaust are noticeably warmer.

Re: Thoughts on Apple M chips?
I used the real-time estimate on the monitoring webpage where it shows each machine's PPD to compare, not by the final points with bonus awarded. Does the software base its calculation using the anticipated bonuses, or just a raw estimate based on time per frame? The only negative I’ve noticed is th...

Re: Thoughts on Apple M chips?
I just picked up an M4 Pro Mac Mini, and have to say I’m impressed after just a couple of WUs processed. I’m getting over 600 KPPD on these, compared to ~300 KPPD on my M1 Max Mac Studio. Both have 8 Performance Cores, but the increase in clock speed and efficiency really shows. Typical multi-core C...

Hi Tom...
Fair enough—the cited example seems to be a good fit for F@H. But the Journal article attempts to use this specific case as a stalking horse for a more general economic argument, hence my skepticism. Glad to contribute to the science though.

I’m sure the Wall Street Journal has no axe to grind... Advertising, lobbying, and executive salaries, etc. eclipse the amount spent on R&D at most, if not all, Big Pharm companies. (I worked at one for 20 years.) Based on recent financial reports, here's a breakdown of R&D spending f...

Re: v8 connect to v7 for status?
I’ve installed the OpenCore package on a couple of my older Macs and successfully used the v8 folding client on them. This allows your Macs to update to newer OS’s — I’ve patched older machines to Sonoma and Ventura without issues. The OpenCore package is fairly mature at this point, and doesn’t req...

Re: Sudden Credit of 250 WUs?
Thanks, Joe.
I had my machines working on beta units earlier this year, and I did wonder if they were being credited correctly.
So I’m glad to hear they’re back in the black, if that’s the case.
