Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?
No, the "open data" does not jump-start drug development. The reason why we could get mRNA vaccines developed so quickly is because the genetic sequence of the virus was quickly discovered and published so that the pharmaceutical companies could start generating vaccine candidates. The Co...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?
DNDI has already funded two new compounds (in partnership with governments and drug companies), as well as gotten ten treatments approved based on known compounds or new combinations of compounds: Treatments delivered Since 2003, DNDi has worked with its worldwide network of partners to: develop two...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?
You're contributing to a project of one of them - the Covid Moonshot consortium and DNDi. Also many research institutions are non-profits. Many private foundations, like those run by anything from rich business owners, to churches, to charities like our national cancer society, fund research. This s...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?
The traditional way of financing pharmaceuticals is that some big company funds development of a bunch of candidate compounds, and when one effective drug is found, they have to recoup all their research and development investments not just in this drug, but for all the candidate drugs which didn't ...

Thank you.
A good thing is that this WU has pretty generous timeout of 3 days, and expiration 7 days, so as long as it's fixed within the weekend, everyone will get their points.

Re: Too big units, comparing to just finished ones
Due to the time critical nature of Folding@Home - (PPD drops the longer you pause a WU and it eventually times out and expires) - and the unpredictable processing times (each project has a different running time on your hardware, which might even vary a bit between WUs), Folding@Home doesn't lend it...

Re: Help building out a folding machine (motherboard specifically)
The EVGA X99 FTW isn't really a "mining" board, but it indeed looks like a very good board for multi-GPU.

Re: INTERRUPTED Problem, just started recently.
In any case, the core shouldn't crash just because the CPU is loaded with higher priority tasks. An impact to performance would be expected if that happens, but it shouldn't crash completely. This sounds to me like either a bug in the folding core or the OS - if hardware stability has been eliminate...

Re: PCIE4 @ x8 mode for 2nd GPU?
Yes, so physical spacing between the slots you're going to use on the motherboard may be important too. Even in a good case, if the cards are sandwiched together with millimeter clearance, they may be thermally throttled.

Re: Help building out a folding machine (motherboard specifically)
Water cooling is a hobby in itself, and you could build a custom loop which cools both GPUs and CPUs, or just one or the other. You might use AIO coolers in creative ways too. It is not very cost effective, but it's a nice DIY project. Don't forget that water cooling means that a water pump has to r...

Re: Computer goes blank, won't revive-cold reboot required
I've got a couple of 6-core AMD processors - Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 5 5600G - feeding work to a couple an Nvidia GPU each. It works just fine, and sometimes they are used for CPU folding as well (when it's cold and power is cheap). The 5600 G seemed to be unstable at first, but it turned out to be a...

Does extra cache of 5800X3D benefit folding or not?
The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D has an extra layer of cache stacked on top of the CPU, which does benefit performance in some games and applications, but has a tradeoff of lower peak clock speeds, which means worse performance than the 5800X in other applications. The statistics gathered so far by the dark ...

Re: How legit is uptodown folding@home? [Not legit]
Unfortunately no - when you run a simulation you need the whole molecule or at least as much of it as the researcher want to simulate. You'll have to find some other project, e.g. in BOINC for those smaller computers.

Re: Q9450 and RX480
Cloud GPU hire via Vast.ai was actually an "economical" way to fold a couple of years ago, depending on your local power costs, before crypto and GPU scarcity made it too expensive to be worth it. The most efficient way to contribute now, perhaps, is to fold when you need heating, and just...
