Re: PCIe Slot Speed - x1 x2 x4 x8 x16

I've already replied multiple times to this question. @Mark, you buy what you like. A $200 Xeon system most likely won't be the most efficient system to fold on (as the most efficient is GPU based), and you could shave off a few dollars off your electric bill, by running 2 budget PCs with 2x PCIE 3...

Re: PCIe Slot Speed - x1 x2 x4 x8 x16

I've already replied multiple times to this question. It's up to you to find and accept those settings, or just go against it. In most cases: PCIE 1.0 x4 / 2.0 x2 / 3.0 x1 is not recommended for folding. You could fold on it, but will experience serious PPD penalties on budget to mid range GPUs. PC...

Re: Building a dedicated rig with 3 GPUs

There shouldn't be that much difference just from x16 to x8. I've got a 1070 in an x4 Gen 3 slot and it's currently at >1m on a P16600. It is typically only around 10% slower than the TitanX in an x16 above it. For a while I had a WiFi card on an x1-wide PCIe slot. For this motherboard, that lowers...

Re: Building a dedicated rig with 3 GPUs

I just finished upgrading a MSI X399 motherboard I had purchased several months ago. AMD Threadripper 1900X 8 Core 3.80 GHz. Has 2 PCIe 16X and 2 PCIe 8X slots. GTX 2080, GTX 1070, GTX 1070, and GTX 960 as well as CPU 12 running My concern was the close proximity of the gpus to each other so I also...

Re: About 2 x GPUs and heat problems

I've pretty much stopped using enclosures for my computers. Gone completely open air computing. Just stumbled on to open air mining frames which now lets me stagger my gpu's from on board to ribbon risers and that keeps several inches in-between gpus and helps cooling them much easier. Tempting. Ne...

Re: About 2 x GPUs and heat problems

How are you controlling the temps on the cards? I really recommend power limiting as a first step and looking at what the fans are really doing on an like MSI Afterburner. I'm on Ubuntu Linux but I guess I could use nvidia-smi to force lower power consumption. But consumption is a little over 150W ...

Re: About 2 x GPUs and heat problems

I stopped doing CPU folding on any cores of the 6-core Ryzen 5 CPU (was using 4 cores for CPU projects). The temperatures of the GPUs (2060, 2060KO) went up. Adding fans usually makes the temperatures of the GPUs go up, too. If I cooled these blasted GPUs with liquid nitrogen, their temperatures wou...

Re: About 2 x GPUs and heat problems

I’m running 2 2060’s in one computer. The upper one runs at around 64c and the lower one at 54c. Fan noise is minimal but I am power limiting them with MSI Afterburner without much ppd loss. I found that my case wasn’t very airflow friendly even though I had 2 140mm fans in the front. I modified my...

Re: Building a dedicated rig with 3 GPUs

Just bought one of these. We'll see how much it helps. Said to be noisy. https://www.amazon.com/Bgears-b-Blaster ... oniccom-20 Airflow on those high rpm fans are limited, when you plug them into the motherboard, and much higher when you connect it to a 4 or 6pin HDD or PCIE connector. They can dra...

Re: Help trying to keep temps down

Have you tried running with the case open ? It doesn't look good and dust control is problematic, but it might be worth a shot to see if it helps. Didn’t seem to help. It’s no emergency but eventually I’ll figure out something. Maybe the next generation of GPU cards will have hybrid or water coolin...

Re: Help trying to keep temps down

I just ordered one of these:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FHM5DJZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 We'll see if it helps cool my two RTX 2060 cards. If so, and if it's not too noisy, I'll buy more. It’s not that noisy. Problem is: couldn’t mount it in what I think is an o...

Re: Should weak GPU folding?

I have a GT1030 somewhere on a half-height card. Supposedly around 68,000 PPD. I have two RTX 2060 cards working now, 1,000,000 PPD each if they can get the right WUs. I don't think I'll bother with the 1030...

Re: Help trying to keep temps down

That will be a LOUD fan - newegg sez it's 70 dBA! Even their 1800 rpm, 103 cfm model is rated at 36 dBA... Also, a typical case fan is 25mm deep. Will your case take the 38mm? FWIW, the highest-flow Noctua 140mm fan (NFA-14 Industrial) gives 158 cfm at 3000 rpm and 41.3 dBA, and is still 25mm deep....

Re: What parts of a GPU card can be used for FAH?

I’ve noticed that little GPU memory gets used and that PCIe bandwidth does matter, yes.

Pretty sure that nobody will make discount FAH cards using chips with defective RT hardware and about 2 Gb of memory...

What parts of a GPU card can be used for FAH?

Are only the shaders useful? I'm assuming that e.g. ray-tracing hardware is not useful. What parts of a GPU can be used for computations?
