BSOD Crash? (Emergency!)

This is an emergency! I don't know if this sudden and unexpected "Blue Screen of Death" system halt is related to execution of the FAH client (or the previous core crash I reported), but since crunching work units is 99.9 percent of what my desktop computer spends its time doing, I'm very ...

Re: Core Crash?

Art, Napoleon: The closest I ever got to being a real honest-to-god "computer scientist" was database programming (which probably doesn't count), so what you guys are discussing is a little over my head. I just hope the problem is not with my machine's RAM or the [disk?] controller or anyt...

Core Crash?

Not sure what to make of this ... A friend informed me that core crashes are “exceedingly rare,” so I should go ahead and post this although it appears (to my inexperienced eye) that my FAH client went on to another work unit – or continued processing the one that crashed. All seems to be working fi...

A Footnote Concerning Rosalind Franklin

Here's a "Nova" documentary covering the life of Rosalind Franklin that aired on PBS back in 2003.

Re: Poll/discussion: technicality of project descriptions

I took a little bit of physics and chemistry in college, but that was many years ago and I never used what I learned once I got out into the "real" world. (I wound up in computer science, specializing in relational database technology.) When my sister was stricken with Parkinson's disease,...

Re: Australian Scientists Discover Possible AIDS Cure

Jesse: I was not aware of Rosalind Franklin, so I looked her up on Wikipedia. I also located this article: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/tech/rosal ... egacy.html in one of the footnotes. It seems that she was treated shabbily by her colleagues, especially her male colleagues. My foster mother, who i...

Australian Scientists Discover Possible AIDS Cure

http://science.slashdot.org/story/13/01 ... -aids-cure http://tinyurl.com/atdux5s What’s interesting about this research is that Dr. Hallich’s team is using the same approach as the Pande Group, (i.e. studying and understanding the interaction of a key protein with the cell membrane - along with som...

Re: Another "Crazy Idea" For Growing FAH

I'm not sure what such a number should be, but I'm thinking a minimum of 50 completed WUs would be required before a new donor could be added to a contestants total. Using number of wu's isn't a good idea, for one thing AFAIK Nvida-GPU will easily finish many wu's per day while with SMP it's maybe ...

Another "Crazy Idea" For Growing FAH

Since my previous "crazy idea" has had more holes shot in it than a slice of swiss cheese, I thought I would try another crazy idea. This one does have something in common with my previous crazy ideas - it requires a nice chunk of money to be donated by somebody who can afford the donation...

Re: Protein Folding Question From a Non-Scientist

Jesse:

I found this interesting video of protein structure on YouTube. (After watching this, I understand what is meant by the term polypeptide chain.)

Protein Folding Question From a Non-Scientist

Today I was attempting to explain protein folding (and misfolding) to a potential new folder. I pointed to this Wikipedia graphic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Protein_folding.png and explained how a fold initially starts as a string of amino acids where atoms "bond" and the chain goe...

Re: FAH Business Card Design (Update)

OK, I'm going with "Stanford University's Folding@Home distributed computing project ..." and leaving out the reference to the medical school. This may not be totally correct, but it's awkward (and verbose) starting off the paragraph with "Stanford University's School of Medicine Fold...

FAH Business Card Design (Update)

Subject: FAH Business Card Design (Update) After giving this FAH business card idea even more thought, (and taking into consideration numerous factors such as “legal complications” involving the use of graphics), I have revised and edited the design as follows. <begin card design> Front of Card : Th...

Re: FAH in the workplace

The Executive Summary may be helpful with your explanations of Folding@home to your employer. Mr. bollix47: Thanks for posting the Executive Summary. Somehow in all the time I've spent on the FAH web site, I managed to overlook this valuable nugget of information. I'm giving serious consideration t...

Re: A "Crazy Idea" For Growing FAH

zagen30, Grey Whiskers, Nathan_P, Art, ford316 et al: Thanks for your comments and thoughtful observations. There is obviously more to this than I realized - especially in the area of "technical problems" and ensuring a fair competition that doesn't rip the FAH community apart. Since figur...
