Re: Upgrade for folding - Phenom IIX4 970 or Phenom IIX6 109

With AMD Bulldozer just around the corner I would be really hesitant to upgrade a rig in the next month. In saying this, the motherboard you're currently using wouldn't support it anyway. Regardless, because K10.5 is a rather underwhelming micro-arch for FAH, the more cores you have the better. So s...

Re: Running F@H and BOINC at the same time

I always go back to BOINC with SETI@Home every few months for a day or two and always get frustrated when i do. The little things bother me with BOINC. Seti@Home's BOINc servers are _always_ down or don't have work.. and they do not have a true multicore capabilitys for SETI@Home project yet.. and ...

Re: Which version of Linux ?

For me, Linux equates to about a 25% increase in speed with my X6 processors over Windows and it is very stable. Really? I was under the impression that A3 on windows had reached a level of performance equal to that of Linux? And for the OP, I suggest that if your rig is purely for folding, then no...

Re: Running F@H and BOINC at the same time

I'd just like to interject for a moment. I really don't want to start a BOINC vs FAH circlejerk thread, but I'm going to have to respectfully call you out on your assumptions, Bruce. I wouldn't make such broad sweeping statements like people who have already decided that FAH is better than BOINC. . ...

I thought this was due to Intel purposely slowing their compiler code for CPU's that aren't Intel x86 i.e. any AMD CPU?

Re: What CPU is better? Intel or AMD?

Regarding the 'high-end CPU', it most certainly does not give 'you' "probably better output for around the same prices". In fact, the exact opposite is the case, again in my own personal experience. Please elaborate, because I have yet to find a 300$ GPU that can output at LEAST 20K PPD &...

Re: Are F@H points weighted?

The points are weighted in favour of the high-performance (PS3, GPU and SMP) clients over the unicore clients. It is true that these clients are less versatile than the unicore client at the moment but the weighting is to reward the additional speed this gives the project. I have already seen one s...

Are F@H points weighted?

By weighted, what I'm referring to is the scientific value of the WU. My understanding of all F@H work units is as follows: you receive a tiny, ridiculously small slice (a WU) of a sector (a project) that is part of a pie (F@H). The impression I get everywhere, on these forums and others, is that yo...

Not everyone runs SMP, but yes if you're running the SMP2 client, you want to get that issue fixed ASAP.

Have you gone over your data allowance?

It won't affect your PPD

We really need a sticky about FAH's [non]application on mobile/embedded devices.

Too many of these threads keep popping up

Re: CPU must have VT to benefit from running VMware?

I don't know if the old X2 4400+ supports some kind of visualization technology, but I run a Linux 64 on XP 32 fine, and performances are good. I also run Linux64 on XP32 on a Q6600. I use VMWare Workstation 6.5 on both machines. That's interesting. Do the X2's support some sort of VT that the inte...
