Re: Failed upload to 140.163.4.200 and 54.157.202.86

This is interesting. I finally got it to Fold on both the CPU and GPU after a re-install of Ubuntu 20.04.5. But even then, it would fold only on the CPU, and I could not get the GUI visible at all. Finally, I added the OpenCl drivers: sudo apt install ocl-icd-opencl-dev That fixed it. It is not norm...

Re: Failed upload to 140.163.4.200 and 54.157.202.86

I uninstalled FAH and tried to re-install it (I use the Python 3 version). It would not allow configuration after install. Then I tried the SNAP version on Ubuntu Software Center. That would not work either even for the CPU, so I could not get to GPU.txt. I think the OS has something wrong with it. ...

Re: Failed upload to 140.163.4.200 and 54.157.202.86

I was wondering if it were something local. It looks like a strange way for the server to fail. But the network is OK, and the card (GTX 1070) is OK for display purposes. I have done all the updates, and nothing fixed it. Maybe a re-installation of the OS or just the Folding Control will fix it, or ...

Re: Accurate de novo design of membrane-traversing macrocycles

Very good. I see a lot of potential overlap, and more importantly synergistic effects where one technique can aid the other.
Folding is at a great stage of its development. I have never seen such interesting stuff.

Accurate de novo design of membrane-traversing macrocycles

This work (cited by bovoviz on the Rosetta forum) by Dr. David Baker and scientists at the Institute of Protein Design (IPD) show the computational design of diverse permeable macrocycles. https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(22)00922-9 It has led to the founding of a new company for that p...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

The Zika vaccine was successful in protecting monkeys, but it went back on the shelf as the threat receded. It turned out to be a dry run.
That is how the Washington Post put it.
But that is irrelevant to my point anyway. They had developed the mRNA technology by the time COVID19 came along.

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

Just looking at the anti-virals, which is what COVID Moonshot is doing, shows the advantage of the free-market system, if you are willing to pay for it. If you aren't, you can wait for the publicly-funded ones. It is like public housing verses private. They each may serve a purpose, but you should u...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

That is very nice, but at least in the case of COVID Moonshot (I did not check the others), they are reliant on funding from the United States NIH. https://dndi.org/research-development/portfolio/covid-moonshot/ I don't think that charities as such are carrying the freight there, and probably can't ...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

By the way, I am all in favor of supporting Folding on COVID, or anything else. But that is because it is different technology than anyone else can do. FAH might be able to find useful molecules that no one else can. But they still have to figure out how to get them through testing and into producti...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

You are confusing a few issues. But the main point is that if a drug is "patent free", it won't earn enough to justify the research and development necessary to create it. The funding (from venture capitalists for example) won't be available unless the investors can get a good return on th...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

That is a good explanation of why drugs are expensive. They cost a lot to develop. (That isn't an "inefficiency" in the economic sense by the way, just the cost of doing business). But you are hoping that someone else, such as charities, etc. come in to fill the gap. OK with me. Where are ...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

Thanks for the interpretation. I certainly hope that the remarkable scientific infrastructure they have in place could be used for the next one. But the "next one" could be here already with some of the Omicron variants. Cheap would be nice, but the only ones that work thus far are the one...

Re: 3950x LOW PPD

One other thought, similar to the power supply idea mentioned above. And that is the voltage regulator on the motherboard is getting flaky. That could cause the CPU speed to vary. (Do you have the latest BIOS?). I have had several Ryzen motherboards fail with bad voltage regulators in the last three...
