Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

The Zika vaccine was successful in protecting monkeys, but it went back on the shelf as the threat receded. It turned out to be a dry run.
That is how the Washington Post put it.
But that is irrelevant to my point anyway. They had developed the mRNA technology by the time COVID19 came along.

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

Just looking at the anti-virals, which is what COVID Moonshot is doing, shows the advantage of the free-market system, if you are willing to pay for it. If you aren't, you can wait for the publicly-funded ones. It is like public housing verses private. They each may serve a purpose, but you should u...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

That is very nice, but at least in the case of COVID Moonshot (I did not check the others), they are reliant on funding from the United States NIH. https://dndi.org/research-development/portfolio/covid-moonshot/ I don't think that charities as such are carrying the freight there, and probably can't ...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

By the way, I am all in favor of supporting Folding on COVID, or anything else. But that is because it is different technology than anyone else can do. FAH might be able to find useful molecules that no one else can. But they still have to figure out how to get them through testing and into producti...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

You are confusing a few issues. But the main point is that if a drug is "patent free", it won't earn enough to justify the research and development necessary to create it. The funding (from venture capitalists for example) won't be available unless the investors can get a good return on th...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

That is a good explanation of why drugs are expensive. They cost a lot to develop. (That isn't an "inefficiency" in the economic sense by the way, just the cost of doing business). But you are hoping that someone else, such as charities, etc. come in to fill the gap. OK with me. Where are ...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

Thanks for the interpretation. I certainly hope that the remarkable scientific infrastructure they have in place could be used for the next one. But the "next one" could be here already with some of the Omicron variants. Cheap would be nice, but the only ones that work thus far are the one...

Re: 3950x LOW PPD

One other thought, similar to the power supply idea mentioned above. And that is the voltage regulator on the motherboard is getting flaky. That could cause the CPU speed to vary. (Do you have the latest BIOS?). I have had several Ryzen motherboards fail with bad voltage regulators in the last three...

Re: 3950x LOW PPD

I don't think that limiting the number of cores will fix the problem, at least not on a permanent basis. But as Joe_H points out, there is a performance "knee" beyond which more cores do not do much good. But occasionally they do. My Ryzen 5950X will normally get only slightly more PPD tha...

Re: CPU has been around 88 C

I undervolt all of my big Ryzens (3900X, 3950X, 5900X, 5950X) in the BIOS to keep them cool. When you boot up, go into the BIOS and look for a setting for the CPU frequency and voltage. For my 3900X for example, I run Frequency: 3800 MHz CPU Voltage: 1.17500 volts If the voltage is too low or the fr...

Re: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS FAHcontrol installation

I would like that, if you don't mind. On this Ubuntu 20.04 LTS install I've not gotten the Python 3 to work at all. I'm currently on: Python 2.7.18 This is a bit of a kludge, but I have it installed on 10 Ubuntu 20.04.4 machines, and it works reliably for Nvidia, and AMD also. See: https://github.c...

Re: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS FAHcontrol installation

Hahaha - never mind I found Folding@Home in Ubuntu Software App as a snap app which installs everything - the client, the controller, & the viewer all at the same time. Nice! I find that running the SNAP version fails after a few weeks on Ubuntu 20.04, for some unknown reason. I thought at firs...

Re: Lack of cancer work units?

I was just wondering if the lack of cancer units meant they'd found something. No, I don't think there is a magic bullet. There are a lot of different types of cancer, and treatments for it. But I am very impressed with their science. It is the most advanced distributed computing project on the Int...

On my CPU work units on five machines, I am running one cancer and one Alzheimers at the moment. https://stats.foldingathome.org/project/16983 https://stats.foldingathome.org/project/18210 Two others are for improving antibiotic therapies https://stats.foldingathome.org/project/18417 https://stats.f...
